The last few years at the dry rack marina I used to give the guy running the fork truck 20 bucks every time I came in to split up, usually with one or two other guys. After the first couple of weeks doing that, all I had to do was drive through the gate and my boat was on the forks, whether there were other people there before me or not. It wasn't much by the time they split it up, but it was enough that they appreciated it and it was more than what they got from most of the other people there. They would even wash the boat for me before putting it away, even if I told them not to worry about it. Bottom line is a few bucks go a long way, same thing at your favorite bar or any other place you like to go; the dockhands, bartenders, etc remember who tips and who doesn't (also who is an ******* and who isn't).

If you can afford to drop 4-5 bucks a gallon on fuel, you can afford to throw a few bucks to the guy/girl at the gas dock. Even if all they do is hand you the pump, which I prefer anyhow.

At LOTO, the dock attendants always pump the gas for you like TriPac said so that's why I tip a little higher and 99% of the time it's a hottie in a bikini as a dock attendant. The girls definitely remember who tips well too :)

I used to work at a gas dock in the late 80's. $5 to $10 is fine depending on the size of the boat. Gas dock attendants are usually happy to get anything because most people don't tip. At least back then they didn't. It's also amazing how the people that tip go right to the front of the line on those busy weekends.

I always tip five at local lunch stops when I arrive. couple times i stiill tip even if they are busy with other boats. ( have no real need for help, its a small boat and I am a docking guru. ( ha, joking, I bet a hose it up next time, that katana thing)
But honestly never thought about fuel attendant ( trailer boat so buy fuel on water rarely) . Great thread.

This is why I haven't been tipping. Read this thread. You might even recognize same names from the past, like Cuda. This is the first boat to get me on the Great Lakes where tipping became an issue and I followed this (bad) advice.

How Much Should You Tip At The Gas Dock?

I have given this some thought and read all the posts (even the old posts from the registry (can't believe it's been 5 yrs ago)) and have decided I am going to keep some 5's in the glove box. I always tip the gas dock and tie-up dock, just never knew how much. It's usually kids workin where I go and i do notice the attention they give me. If a kid has a lemonade stand and is sellin a cup for a quarter, I give a buck cuz I love their effort (people did it to my kids and I thought it was cool). So the kids at the gas dock and tie-up dock are older, I still think they appreciate it.

Not just my $.02, now my $5, haha.

I normally tip 5 to 10 unless they have a **** attitude (I only get fuel)
But if i go to the self serve gas dock then no tip as there isnt any dock help ect...

I'll tip the dock help but i really dislike the whole tipping process in our society. It seems more and more places have tip jars at the cash register where all the employee or owner does is take your money and give change.

Growing up in the marine service world, in the early 90's there was always extra money flyin around. Customers would tip for ice, carrying a cooler, gas, launches and docking assistance. We , always appreciated it. I never forgot, so sure, I always grease the dock staff at wherever we go. Usually it gets a little preferential treatment and a smile.
