How to spray Awlgrip on boat sides.
 

I am looking to paint a magnum 27 sedan this summer. How hard is it to spray awlgrip on hull sides. If you could give me any tips on how to get a great finish and all the steps that are involved. I have seen many awlgrip paint jobs that have looked really great and some that look poor. How do you use the spray gun when painting as in how to move the spray gun and any techniques that will help. How many coats of primer do you use and how many coats of topcoat do you use? Thanks for any replies.

1st thing is you need a "Good Quality" Spray Gun, With a tip sized for spraying paint. Not a tip for spraying primer. This gun will need to atomize the paint particles very fine. With the gun about 10" away and the "Spray Pattern" (Fan) about 10" make long (about 4'-5') horizontal passes, over lapping about 5" of the previous pass with each subsequent pass. You'll need a good light so you can see the reflection of the paint as it is going on, if it starts "Piling up" your going too slow and you'll get runs, if it looks dry your going too fast. when you get to the end of each pass you will need to let off the trigger as you stop to change direction. It's good to practice on something else (that has vertical surfaces) The Light and the gun are the two Must Haves, Patience will help as well. You can practice with a spray can (on something else) and get the Knack of what should be, use the light and see how over lapping properly affects the finish. You can do it :)

Trial and error on a big flat panel. Been painting over 20yrs, still hard to explain in words. See if you can hit up a local shop and watch the painter. Maybe get some tips. It's not rocket science but it is a skilled art. Pm me and I can call and try to help.

Have you ever painted with a spray gun?? imron and awlgrip is one of the hardest next to candy to paing..it runs real easy if your not careful..

Thin coats and wait a half hour or more between coats (depending on temperature). It has a tendency to run be careful.

That video shows spraying airless, much different than a hvlp gun.

I painted that for years. From 48 foot romers to smaller pleaseure boats .

Here is how to do it.

Get a hot plate or stove and heat the paint up so it is thin enough to spray. DO NOT reduce it.

Piss a almost dry coat on first, light to medium at most..

Wait until it is tacky. About 20-30 min.

Then spray a nice wet even coat.

That's It!

It is a really durable paint that I have a lot of confidence in. It just has limited colors.
