Charts on your IPhone 5
I just loaded a $14 app from Navionics with US and Canadian Charts to my IPhone 5
Pretty slick, going to try it our this weekend. Looks like it will work for what I want it to, zoom, track, waypoint and GPS position. Not really a full on chart plotter but good enough to keep me out of trouble if I trailer to a new to me boating destination. As much as I like technology, for me it is a real waste to spend $600 or more on another GPS or chart plotter for the day trips we take. We have a Samsung Galaxy Tablet at home, won it at a Stag&Doe party for my Nephew, bigger screen than the IPhone, I figure I could mount the tablet on the flat part of my dash on my Formula SR1 27ft and maybe use it as a monitor. Anybody know if there is a cable that would go Iphone to Samsung Tablet so I could show the charts in a little larger format? Local Staples staff gave me the deer in the headlights look when I asked them to see if something like that existed |

Works great, and when you are moving it has a heading line to show you what direction you are pointing....very useful at night when trying to run parallel to the shoreline. |
I'm running the "Garmin Blue Water" App on the 4G iPad. The app was $60, but it's the real deal.
I haven't worked out the mounting and glare issues with the iPad on the dash. Any comments/ideas along those lines would be appreciated too. Hope that's not a Hijack request. |

It works great as I used it on our recent trip aboard friends Hatteras cruising from Ft. Pierce, Fl. to The Abacos and then returning to Freeport, Bahamas. With GPS it nevered lost tracking although I think I accidently turned it off a couple of times so the archieved routes are not continuous. These pics are zoomed out so you don't get the buoys and all.

This one is zoomed in and as we are leaving Ft. Pierce heading across the Atlantic.
