It's funny, lots of people kept telling us how warm it was in Florida, well last Summer at LOTO we had six weeks straight of almost 100 degree weather with the humidity in the 90%, it doesn't get any hotter than the midwest and the winters are miserable, ...........I thought this thread was where would you RETIRE, we've been here in the Cape since last October and have never had to look for something to do, there's either something going on here at the Cape, on Ft. Myers Beach, Marco Island, Sarasota, Naples, Punta Gorda.....................all these places are less than a hour boat or car ride, crap we can drive to Tampa or Miami in two hours.
It's less than a six hour drive to KW or we can take the Key West Express, do I need to keep going, I'm thrilled you guys love the North, but I lived in the midwest for 57 years and I'm going to finish out what's left down here in Florida........oh, did I mention I can go out back and jump in the pool anytime of the year, yes, even in January and February, we live on the ICW and we love living by Rumruners, it's our hangout, it's great to be able to jump in our boat and fly out to the GULF OF MEXICO anytime we want.....................have fun everybody. |
I am more then happy that people would rather retire in MI then FL.
Keeps it from getting any more crowded. |
Lake Lanier or Lake Norman. Both very close to great Southeastern Cities with excellent year around climate. Nice change of season without a brutal winter to deal with. The boating is great on either with no hassling from enforcement of any kind. The average day in winter hits around 50 degrees.

Avg 50? Brrrr. I barely rarely ever see a 50 degree day. |
I think my 2 choices would be Destin and Key west, being a beach bum or the likes. When i eventually sell out, i would like to buy a small hotel/motel with clean beachy style rooms on a beach and just run it.
|
Anyone just has to look at Jayboat's pictures and then decide where you would want to retire, pretty simple answer then.
|
just ran across this today,,looks interesting! and reasonable.. http://www.lakekeoweerealestateexper...?Listing=20034

This was great reading. Been boating in the NY Hudson valley for 40 years. Time to go toward the palm trees.
Been hearing that central Florida has fresh water lakes that meet each other and join the St. John's river. Didn't see any of that on this thread. Can anybody fill me in about that area? Thanx |

Hell, I'd give Tarantino the script outline- you, in the tackiest Hawaiian shirt known to mankind, with nuclear-sized beer belly kicked back in a cheap plastic bar chair with rusty legs... in front of a building of questionable repair and repute with mismatched paint... Cigar in one hand, Pabst in the other... leering at the twinkies and cursing the chickens. Perfect match. Do it. :evilb: |

My favorites would be down in the valley around Harlingen near Port Isabel or a little more north near Port Mansfield. Google Laguna Madre for pic's of some great water protected by South Padre Island. Coming up the coast- Padre Island or Corpus Christi, Rockport, Port O'Conner, Palacios, Matagorda, Sargent, Freeport/Lake Jackson, Galveston Island, and Bolivar Peninsula.. Our people are very friendly and your dollar goes much further on the cost of living than most states in our nation. One drawback like all the Gulf Coast ports and near coast cities is our chance of hurricanes. See ya, Kelly |
I challenge any to find housing prices as low as Cape Coral. 3 bedroom 2 bathroom gulf access waterfront for as low as 200. I'm sure other areas are fantastic but I bet you can't buy a house as low priced as we can
|
I have been looking at buying property in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. American lifestyle, taxes, law, passport + easy boating to all the Caribbean Islands. Not a full time thing but 4-5 months a year I think.

What he said! I love the change of Seasons and Summer boating in Buffalo, NY, but the Winters are just WAY too freaking long and snow sucks! I bought a Condo with a dock on a direct access canal in Cape Coral to spend my Winters when I retire. :drink:

I can vouch for Lake Norman, NC. Charlotte/Mooresville are awesome cities that haven't gotten too large (yet), good climate, just all around the best lake environment I've ever seen with great restaurants, clean water, and your also not far away from the mountains, the ocean, and more. You can't beat NC for the diversity of things to do and someday I hope to move back there!

Many of you probably boat in an area that my wife and I would love to retire. Please share your thoughts.
Ideally we would prefer clean, fresh water in an area that is performance boat/ personal watercraft friendly. Year round access to good restaurants, shopping, and medical care, including a Veterans Hospital within perhaps an 1 hour or so ride are important to us. A reasonable cost of living and reasonable taxes would be really nice. (We currently have our home and our waterfront both in New York, and the property taxes are anything but reasonable!) If all of the neighbors were and bunch friendly, respectable gear heads that enjoy high performance motorsports, good restaurants, and a glass of decent wine we would we would sell both of our properties and move there in a heart beat! Thank you in advance for your help! Hampton Roads Virginia area. Five cities incvluding Virginia Beach, V.A. hospital and several military bases, Portsmouth Naval Hospital and numerous on base clinics, Chesapeake Bay, James River, Intracoastal Waterway, Outer Banks, nearby freshwater reservoirs/lakes....etc. Good luck and congrats on the pondered retirement. |
I love Northern MI. for boating in the summer, and will keep my home here as a "home base", and I have a condo in Havasu for the winter months! Can still boat, and we like to take week long trips to other South West Destinations We love the Desert area ( and can still Boat) works for us.
|
Summers in LOTO and winters in Havasu would be my ideal.

Been to Havasu a few times, not much to do on most weekends, not many places to eat or DRINK, there's WP from two different states watching to all the time......oh and did I mention that the thirty minutes that it takes you to get to one side of the Lake to the other, it's time to turn around, what's the whole Lake is maybe twenty-five miles long.
The best thing I see about Havasu is that it's two and half hour drive away from Vegas. |

Been there once. I felt the same way. Don't get the attraction to it.
I understand, people either love the Desert or hate it. No middle ground on that! We enjoy the ride up river to Laughlin for dinner and some entertainment. 70 miles from Laughlin to Parker. |

Game Over! 50 miles from Ft Lauderdale, 42 from Miami and the clearest water on the planet! :D http://youtube.com/watch?v=jhTXms5Bpi4&feature=related |
I met two couples this week in Sandusky, OH (PIB and Kelley's Island). Both have condo's at Castaway Bay and homes in FL. They spend the summer months at the condo and in the winter, back to FL. If I had that kind of money, that's the way I'd go.

I also might add northern NY is pretty nice I live here now. Thousand islands is a pretty awesome place, you can also hit lake Ontario. You can boat up to Montreal or all the way to the ocean, run up to Canada and hit the Kingston River. Housing on the St Lawrence is going to run you pretty penny thought. That might be a part of your decision making as well, if you want to live on the water or not, as regardless of where you go if you choose to be on the water, your going to pay.
Me personally and our plan is to probably have a home base in the north and as the weather goes bad travel to where its warm. I just don't think we would like to live in something hot all year around. But I do think whatever your decision is to have a home is good idea. I know some people who sell everything and kind of run place to place renting or in a motor home. Which to each his own, but if something goes wrong hard times, etc, I don't think we would want to be scrambling to find a permament home. |

Just an example. Some more some less depending on if you have a bridge to go under or not |
When we moved down here and realized that we could drive our car or boat an hour North or South and get to Punta Gorda (N) and Marco Island (S) we almost moved, it really sucks. :lolhit:

Lol

The SW Florida Ft. Meyers/Punta Gorda area gives a lot of bang for the buck but it's not fresh water which was one of your criteria. Pompano Beach in SE florida is another great value in this market. older waterfront homes with Ocean access can be had in the mid $300K range.
For fresh water...take a look at the Palatka/St. Johns river area SW of Jacksonville, Fl. The winters are mild and the population demographics are friendly...great boating area. |
Check out Astor fl. St.Johns river, fresh water, big ramp with docks, marina, bars and food. Fish, lily pads, deep water, big springs. Cheap prices. Some fast boats, noise ok. No salt water to mess up your boat!!! South to Sanford or north to jacksonvile or intercoastal waterway. Daytona 50 miles away. Do a google search. Check out web site, nancybrand.com. I have marina lot for sale.

Portland Oregon.
No sales tax what so ever. Illegal to pump your own gas. One of the largest VA hospitals on the west coast Willamette River (150 miles long) runs right thru the middle of town, then connects to the Columbia which runs all the way to the Pacific Ocean (westerly) and Idaho (easterly) (400 miles long) Fresh water until you get to about 10 miles from the bar. Lake Billy Chinook (lil Havasu/Mead/Powell). Central Oregon's hidden jewel. We have just about every kinda performance boating there is. River Jets http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeAiDFXpAsQ Drag Boats http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8DvddlCmTo Wake Boarding http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IvuNnxE3k0 Wake Surfing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUw2P--9Kg4 Fun Runs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmEbojVdcMc Mount Hood for skiing is 90 minutes away. Pacific Coast is just 90 minutes away. We get a yearly (10 days of) weather in the 90's. rest of summer 70-80. Winters are fairly mild, temps in the 40's most of the time, but we do get our fair share of rain fall (thats why our streams and lakes are so clean and full). We have a downtown water front area that features concerts and festivals. They sometimes refer to Portland as Bridge City, as we have 9 bridges covering the Willamette River in Portland connecting the West side to the East side. |
Hello ICU, St Johns river flows South to North about 160 miles from Sanford to Jacksonvile, fl. Astor ,fl is about 120 miles from the salt water, about 40 miles by highway to the best beachs. I would not use any of my boats in the salt water !!! No need to worry about shallow water. Party with the wild ones at Silver Glen Springs. Or pull up to a bar for a cold one. Run as fast as you want in most places. Open pipes ok. Veiocity Boats test here; I,v seen Kieth Eckhart testing. Any size boat to a big cat to a trawer. Just sayen check Astor, Fl out
|
Has anyone seen the million dollar boats that sit in salt water all around the world, if they can sit in it 24/365 my Fomrula is OK in it, maintenance, you've just got to clean your boat, it's that simple, if you're LAZY you shouldn't boat in salt.
|
why not hawaii!!!
best all around temps year round! Boat from Island to island! and be in paradise!! |
