Flashback: On this day, back in 1943, the Queen Mary carried the greatest number of people on a floating vessel: 15,740 troops and 942 crew; totaling 16,683. This record is still held today.

She was the fastest, safest means of transporting troops. Virtually impossible to torpedo at 30+ knots and zig-zagging. She required extensive refitting after the war, due to bored troops "personalizing" the fixtures.
