HOLLAND, Mich (AP) — One man was killed and another is missing and presumed drowned after a 42-foot power boat carrying four people capsized Saturday on Lake Michigan as the driver was making a turn, authorities said. The single-boat accident happened about 9:45 a.m. EDT near the western Michigan community of Holland. U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Craig Lawrance said the men on board were part of a Smoke on the Water Poker Run that included 60 to 70 boats. He said the boat was speeding from Grand Haven to Holland when the driver overcompensated for a missed turn, slowing from about 110 mph to about 70 mph. Lawrance said alcohol was not a factor. A 20-year-old Bristol, R.I., man died from his injuries, and the 42-year-old missing man is from Hartland, Wis., authorities said. Ottawa County sheriff's Sgt. Kevin Allman said he likely drowned. Sgt. Scott Tatrow of the Allegan County Sheriff's Department told WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids that the passengers were wearing life preservers but they came off when straps broke from impact with the water. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and boat were joined by divers from the Ottawa and Allegan county sheriff's departments in a search of the lake Saturday afternoon. The driver of the boat was taken to Holland Community Hospital for treatment of back injuries, while a fourth man on board was not injured. Additional information about the men wasn't immediately released. Lawrance said the poker run involves boaters making stops at various locations on land and in the water to collect cards for a poker hand. The two-day event is based in Grand Haven and has been held annually since 2001, according to a Smoke on the Water Web site. Boaters take a 141-mile course with stops in South Haven, Holland, Muskegon and White Lake. Absolutely awful!! My brother was running near him when it happened. He said the driver/owner was an older man with very little boating experience & was driving way too fast & erratically. Everyone got out of his way, when the boat caught a wave & started tumbling. Above is the complete story I looked up; re-reading it I realize now that the comment about inexperience was posted by someone other than the stories author. I'm just going to leave that part of the story right where it is as it doesn't matter at this point what caused the boat to roll... inexperience or ??? As far as having my head in the sand... I never actually posted my personal preference... I just stated that I want it to be MY decision, so if the seas are rough and it makes ME feel safer then I'll wear it, same with the seat belt in my car and a helmet on my head when riding my bike, it SHOULD always be MY choice... PERIOD! I just want you (boatme) to know that at the end of the day... I get it, you ran a great event that helped a lot of kids doing something you loved and then you had to sit in court and listen to how horrible it was that 2 people died and on top of that they want to bankrupt you and all you did was to try and run an event to help kids... 'nuff said! I did not always wear my life vests in Poker runs untill after 2005 then it was made painfully clear why they were nessesary (by the way if it werent for the PFD's the other two guys in the accident at our event may not have survived) Just one more comment --People can run how they want and with or without a life vest when out on any normal day. But in an event, it may not be you that screws up but the guy in the boat next to you (or his boat breaks IE drive , motor, ect...) and then runs over you (see lake Texoma 2006) When other people are involved I am just saying that Saftey should be parmount because you can not fix stupid you can some time minimize its effects LOL. Have a great day |
For the record none of my posts were taking shots at the OP. (I congradulated him in almost every post for his hard work paying off in a well performing boat). I never said he did anything wrong. And while I feel he (and his passengers) "should" have worn jakets, if not made manditory by the organizer than 100% his choice. My only problem is/was with the organizer. As Boatme has stated (and others) once you give a prize for first to a stop it changes the scope of the event. That was my only point.

congrats. Looks like you had a great time.

Is that a velocity? What power?
Bad part was we ran our race drive for low end and not the top end lower, so we left maybe 4-6mph on the table. The boat was sold and is back racing OPA under miss PTM #624. |
I guess this is hijacking but if anyone is interested how and why i feel the way i do go to this link

It's great to hear your boat ran so good . There is no better feeling after turning your own wrenches . A big thank you goes out to all here that helped this man achieve his goals by giving good sound advice . There is still a grassroots high performance boating crowd that hangs here and really enjoy threads like this . You also have the same birds that always make post with the intent of starting chit . We need an ignore button .

Sorry but this is plain stupid to give award out for fastest anything at a poker run This immediately absolves insurance from any coverage (seen as a race) and if there was an accident the lawyers would be all over this. It is a rally NOT A RACE! Giving any awards for speed at a poker run is just a way bad idea. WOW after all this time people still have not learned :( No offense to the winner of this award but the poker run organizers should be drawn and quartered for this irresponsible thought process The whole Poker run thing is a thinly veiled way to put on a race. Which is why people participate. We can all "rally" any weekend with our friends. Congratulations cp5899 on getting your boat to perform how you like. Nice job! Sounds like a wicked Velocity. |
