Hot Coating is a thin layer of resin, with a bit more catalyst in it, that is sprayed or brushed over the surface of the balsa core to seal the surface so the next layer of fiberglass resin doesn't soak into the balsa more than desired. The extra catalyst ensures it cures properly.

Just curious...any reason why you chose balsa core over foam core?

+1 on balsa rather than foam or PP honeycomb?

Stiffer, stronger core structure with Balsa's end-grain orientation, better impact strength. We use higher density core in the bottom and lighter density in the sides and deck.

Ok I got ya. When I was redoing my transom a few people were talking about using some new composite material kind of like a foam but I went back to marine ply. My reasoning was strength and I feel like the wood would flex rather than break. Wasn't too sure about the other material.
