Have Bravo drives.

But your next boat might not, hang on to them. Which ones are the best?

I use this one seemed to hold better than the cheap circle one.

Then I put tape on my nose cone pick- up

X3, you don't have to worry about them falling off. However, I have a sea strainer and flush through it.

Thanks guys!

Question, do you need to tape off sea strainer pick ups when winterizing?

Can you elaborate on the process of flushing through the sea strainers a bit more???
Thanks!

Instead of putting muffs on the drive, you connect the hose directly to the fitting on the sea strainer. However, I don't think all sea strainers have a fitting on the lid.

Do you mean hull mounted water intakes? My sea strainer is plumbed to the hose that goes to the transom assembly. So, the water is still picked up through the drive.

Yes transom mounted intakes. Can never remember if I need to tape intakes off as well is plug the intercooler outlet.

Why would you do that? To keep critters/bugs out?

Boat has Merc 700's, with hose hooked to flush out fittings have a heck of a time getting the anti freeze to flow. Just looking for a way to expedite the process. Winterizing sucks, this just adds to the frustration of not boating for six months.

I've been using one of these kits to winterize for years. I pressurize the tank through the vent hole with my compressor. I also added a fatter hose to the output side. It helps the AF flow.

Marine/RV anti freeze as it is non toxic and your likely to spill some, have some leak out on the ground and then blow it all out the exhaust in the spring.

Ear plugs work too.

x100
these will not come off when your flushing alone.

If you a have a strainer, some have a valve that you can hook hose to inside connection instead of through drive.

MonkeySea2 09-27-2013 09:26 AM

I stopped using muffs because I'm always working alone and they have fallen off or leaked so bad that I hate them. So I use a huge plastic storage tub that I slide under my Bravo drive. Then I fill it with water and just keep the hose running on a trickle. I feel much safer that way while I'm on the boat not able to watch the hose.

Yup, I use the pink stuff. As far as the t-stat, I just made sure the motor was up to regular operating temp. My current (525efi) and last motor (496HO) had closed cooling so no worries about the t-stat.

I run the pink stuff through, and then drain everything. I always drain my headers after I flush even during the season. I read that draining them prolongs their lifespan.
