You need a copy of the receipt from the Florida owner to the Texas dealer. Then a receipt from the Texas dealer to you. They refer to it as a chain of ownership. I just went through it this summer. Did the dealer in Texas sign or make any notes on the title? If not you could always "create" a receipt from the Florida owner to you. Just be careful on the whole tax evasion issue, NYS wants their money, make the sale amount reasonable if you change it.

The title has the Texas dealers name on it as well as the dealerships owners signature. I am just going to double check at the NY DMV on Monday.

That's normal, he just needs to re-assign it to you and you need a notorized bill of sale. Have him fill out a dtf-802 as well for extra measure.

Thanks for your help. That's what the owner told me yesterday. Should be good to go.

Don't forget about the trailer too, they gave me a hard time with my boat and trailer because you need a title for it and a separate bill of sale for the trailer.

It also took new york 4 months to get me my title for my boat!!

I'll second this.

If the Texas seller was a private party ho would have had to register for title in Tx, pay sales tax, and then sell his rights of ownership to you.
As a dealer it's for resale and his reassigment and sales receipt or bill of sale should be all you need.

Congrats on the new boat.

See ya,
Kelly.
