Check out this post from another forum.

This was posted in another place I frequent. It's a newsgroup called rec.boats. I'm going to paste it here because it doesn't have a URL that I can link to.

I was hoping some of you would go there and post your opinions on the subject. Maybe be PC when posting, but if not that's ok IMO.

Just subscribe to the newsgroup rec.boats and go to the thread titled "Boat Noise".

Here's the original post.

DON'T LET ME DOWN GUYS!!!!

I have a couple questions regarding extremely noisy (cigarette type) boats.

1. How have other jurisdictions dealt with this problem? Any suggestions?
2. What is in these peoples' brain chemistry that allows them to disturb
thousands of people in a normally quiet area for no other reason than some
strange need for self-gratification.

Does anyone know if there is a more appropriate newsgroup where this message
can be posted?

Thank you,

CNH

He's probably a card carrying member of the Save The Manatee club too!!!

Self gratification my ass!!!!!

ActiveThunderTodd 08-06-2002 11:03 PM

I went there and posted my opinion Buck.:D :D

Red Stripe 08-06-2002 11:03 PM

Other peoples kids:rolleyes:  :D

MACDAD260 08-06-2002 11:04 PM

We need to police ourselves on the noise issue or someone else will do it for us. My boat has Corsa Captain's Call and I use it whenever I am near other people just out of respect to others. I like loud motors as much as anyone and when I am offshore I always open it up. However, I don't believe I have any right to blast away someone else's peace and quiet when they have as much right to enjoy the outdoors as I do. Just my .02

ActiveThunderTodd 08-06-2002 11:12 PM

My problem with this is that people always pick on the performance powerboater. How about the Harley's with straight pipes that just about blow your ear drums out as they blast by. Or the street rods cruising around on Fri or Sat nights. How about the semis that use their jake brakes every where. I agree and I also use my silent choice in the marines and other areas that people might be relaxing at. However I had someone yell at me one time when I was off Ft. Myers Beach after I got anchored. I couldn't believe it. I was offshore ahving fun. I just ignored the old lady and went on with my fun day.

US1 Fountain 08-06-2002 11:23 PM

ahhh, Rec. Boats. Ain't been there for a couple of yrs. Is Harry and Skippy (Skipper) still around and going at it?

OkieTunnel 08-06-2002 11:48 PM

OK, I'm a ding dong:D How do I get there? I want to cuss because we have had a group of people at our local lake pass a petition saying you can be 2 miles from the lake and can't hear someone next to you talking because of the performance boats. I would be damn proud if my boat made THAT much noise! There are dozens of personal watercraft accidents, drownings, and other problems every year on this lake. The lake patrol frequent our beach (where all the performance boats hang out) just too hang out. We are good citizens and have never been involved in any of the accidents on our lake, And somehow we get targeted. The lake patrol came and told us that there is being pressure applied and he needs all of us to run silencers, baffles etc. to pacify this group. Labor day weekend is coming up. 1 or 2 people will probably drown. There will be at least one pwc accident. And I, will somehow be enemy #1 as I drive around with baffles, in my should be illegal performance boat. I, who know CPR and even carry oxygen! No Sh#*!

I can't get in !
Would someone give them a message for me ?

That would be "BLOW ME '!

blackhawk 08-07-2002 12:09 AM

I agree with Todd. I have had Harley's literally make me jump when I didn't see them and they started next to me when I was driving. I always turn my silent choice on in no wake canals, rivers, campgrounds, etc. But if people have a problem with my loud boat when I am cruising that's too bad. What do you expect when you go to the lake?

I was stopped by the water patrol two years ago with their brand new decibel meter. I passed. The cop was actually pretty cool. Right after we got done a jet boat opened her up about a 1/4 mile away. That thing was SOOOOOOOO LOUD. I was like hey, you better go get him, he's way louder than I am. :D

buck183 08-07-2002 12:09 AM

Todd.....Thanks for going and replying. I'm hoping a lot of the members go there and voice a little bit. I was thinking about the Harley topic too.

MACDAD260...You are correct in everything you've said. I was hoping some of the people that own "Cigarette" style boats would give some opinions like this on the site to put it in perspective. Did you see the link I put on my post? LOL

US Fountain.....Yes, Harry's still there. Seems to be more worried about politics then boating IMO.

OkieTunnel.....I can tell you how to get there on Outlook Express. Go to your email account. Then go to tools, then to newsgroups. Type in the title rec.boats just like I spelled it. Then click on subscribe, then ok it. On the left side of your Outlook Express screen you will now have it as an option along with your inbox, outbox, and deleted items and so on. Click on it and read the topics.

Hoping to see more of the members post there. PLEASE!!!

Buck, I tried what you said in my outlook express and it came up as "there are no items which match your filter criteria"?

Any suggestions?

dkwestern 08-07-2002 07:24 AM

They sound like a bunch of toolboxes, riding on pontoons

C_Spray 08-07-2002 08:00 AM

I started a thread about the image of performance boaters on BoaterEd.com last year, and this was by far the most common complaint. Although most people admitted they liked the sound most of the time, it can be pretty offensive if you're anchored up in a "quiet" cove or enjoying a tall cool one at the end of the day. I agree - If you have Captains Call - use it.

I wouldn't advocate going to rec.boats and flaming the guy - just let him know that you (we) do what we can to be responsible boaters by making sure we meet each state's particular requirements. If you don't know what your state law is, go to Corsaperf.com - they have them all listed: http://www.corsaperf.com/mlaws.htm

gmhdfan 08-07-2002 08:17 AM

"Loud Pipes saves lives" or so they say. I had a cop get his night stick stuck in my drag pipes on my Harley in Daytona during bike week. He didn't beleive I had baffles in the pipes so in goes the night stick and the baffle was like a chinese handcuff and he couldn't get it out. Now I am getting really pissed and he calls for backup. They show up saw what was going on and couldn't stop laughing. Idiot got it out and looked like a dog was chewing on it:eek: The air boats around here make more noise than the boats. And I don't think they want to mess with the "good ole boys" but I guess enough city folks will be moving out this way soon. I don't know about you but I think the sound of lake lice buzzing around is worse. I would rather listen to a Opened header big blocks than a Honda at a red light with a stereo so loud that it shakes my truck next to it.  I think it has more to do with who they can extort (they call it revenue) money from. You can't get blood out of a rock.

THE BULL 08-07-2002 08:26 AM

must be a sailboaters website............nothing against sailboaters......but around here we call them wafi's.......wind assisted f*&^%$ idiots !!!!!

KAAMA 08-07-2002 08:29 AM

We are already being infringed upon engough as it is. I agree with "Blackhawk"; when a person goes to a lake or a beach or the ocean, what does he/she really expect? There's probably going to be a little noise going on there. There's plenty of jet ski's and sea doos that are loud as well. They may sound different, but they're still loud and many times they are much closer to the people on the beaches within closer earshot of the people. Maybe I ought to complain about the people who are always complaining about the sound. I'm not out to try and disturb anyone's peace, but the water ways seem to be our last and only frontier these days. It's NOT a perfect world and if these people want total peace and quiet perhaps they should go live out in a desert mountain top or something.

CRUBOSS 08-07-2002 08:46 AM

was this guy a "blowboater" ? was he eating his shreaded wheat on the deck when you came by ? is he part of the rainbow coalition ??? give me a break !

Jayl13 08-07-2002 09:09 AM

I just removed all my silent choice stuff from my boat
It is not mandatory and I would not have used it anyway.
Anyone want it?
twin application, air pump, diverters, wishbone pipes, couplers, everything you need minus a switch and some air lines (have all fittings but some air lines need replacing)
real cheap
I wanted my boat LOUD as possible and no it is not because of the above mentioned statement.
I wanted it loud cause I personally Like it loud.
It grabs attention. It gets people to be like WTF?
When you dock at a waterfront restruant, a loud boat stops everything and tons of people go look and they are all wishing that was them on the boat pulling in.
Well now it is MY turn
I want to be the guy on the loud boat pulling in and now with my dry exhaust I have accomplished that.
if I get some sort of ticket for being loud, I pay it and toss it over board
Come and get me again and again I dont care
Im not going to change my exhaust unless I get headers
Bite me
Jason

buck183 08-07-2002 09:12 AM

hp500efi.....just try typing something like "boats" and see what comes up. You should get several hundred options from that alone. See if one of them is rec.boats.

Guys, I agree about not going a having 200 of us flame this guy(s) to death. But I do feel we need to be heard. If there are some rude comments made toward a post you make, then by all means feel free to reply with appropriate words. I am hoping to see several hundred of the members here go over and voice themselves.

Jayl13 ... email me at [email protected] with details, I may be interested.

KAAMA 08-07-2002 11:26 AM

In your search box type in "Rec.boats burgee" and it will bring you to the website. Then click on "What's rec.boats? What's a burgee?" I DID repsond, but it must have been sent to the person who originated the thread. I prefered that it be posted for everyone to see----is there a way of doing that without starting a new thread?

BTW, Buck I saw you're name in there somehow---how'd you do that?

BADA BING 08-07-2002 11:45 AM

The guy must live in Newport Harbour on a 1974 27ft Sailboat:mad:

Just my 02:D :D

Audiofn 08-07-2002 12:28 PM

Jay I am going to totally disagree with ya on this one. Sorry. Yes some guys are looking at you and saying cool. However I am betting that MOST of them are saying SHUT THAT F-ING thing off!!!! When you are eating lunch trying to have a conversation it would suck to have to all of the sudden have to yell to overcome dry exhaust. I run Teague Tips and with the hit of a buttom I can close it up. If I want I can hit the switch quick and everyone can hear what it has for open but most of the time I leave them closed when off plane. Just for the neighbors. You have to realize that lots of people to to the ocean for the peace and quiet. Well we do kind of ruin that for them don't we. Anyhow I think we all owe it to one another to try and slow things down with all the noise ordinances and be responsible and try and keep them closed when we can. Ok FLAME AWAY!!!

Jon

Cord 08-07-2002 12:35 PM

Jon-all I can say is that I hope it's the paint fumes and the fact that you have a trailer queen. :D

Audiofn 08-07-2002 12:39 PM

No Cord it is the fact that I see the future meaning that I will have a trailer queen not because it does not run but because it is to Loud or to fast or what ever. You have to put yourself it the other guys shoose just a but if you are to make a judgement. I will say this however. My true opinion is that they should stop their wining and shut up. We drive by in about 2 min and we are gone so deal it is 2 min out of you many hour day. HOWEVER the reality is that these people seem to be MUCH more organized then us and have the ability to affect change in a negative way for US!!!! So pissing them off is probably not the best thing for us to do.

Jon

CigDaze 08-07-2002 12:42 PM

[To the original rec.boats complainer]
"Hey, Tough $hit!"
...And that's all I have to say about that!

We all have to share the waters, and we all have an obligation to live and let live, right?? Right!!!

They may not like our loud pipes, but I sure as hell don't like them gleefully flapping around in the breeze like a damn whirly-bird getting in my way either.

Solution: They listen to my noise and I dodge them like bullets! Simple and effective. I shut the fugg-up, and they shut the fugg up! :D

You do it your way, I do it mine!

Donzi Corleone 08-07-2002 07:37 PM

Hey, IT`S A FREE COUNTRY!!! Everyone makes good points,But if your making the noise to position your vessel,OH WELL GET A LIFE.Two minutes is not alot to ask. Why people concern themselves with what someone else is doing is beyond me. If u wanna start mudslingin then all these huge Yachts need to tame there wakes when approaching smaller vessels. These boats throw out an enormous wake that could be dangerous to other craft in the area. The list can go on and on!!! Bottom line "STOP TRYING TO IMPOSE YOUR LIKES AND DISLIKES ON ME" I have a passion for perf. boats of any kind, so why should they be penalized because of a few who don`t care for real hardware. I agree if it`s peace and quiet you want "STAY HOME" noise is everywhere.:p

XS Wetness 08-07-2002 08:28 PM

My boat is loud because I want it that way and the last time I checked we were still living in the good ole USA!!!:) :) :)

And in my opinion anyone that would complain about something as beautiful as the sound of our boats should pack their **** and move to Cuba because they must be communist!!!

mopower 08-07-2002 08:58 PM

Speed2lead,
"Stop trying to impose your likes and dislikes on me"

Isn't that exactly what you are doing to someone else:confused: Last year in Maryland a guy pulled into the Nauti Goose with a REAL loud one...had to turn around and back in so everyone could get the full effect:rolleyes: He actually got a big round of applause when he shut them down:D He also didn't hear all the comments from the crowd...like Audiofn said.they weren't good comments.
Myself,I don't care one way or the other. It's just that I got tired of screaming at the person 3' away from me. Not to mention all the HUH'S , WATCHA SAY , and I CAN"T HEAR YA'S I had to scream back. I also got a noise ticket with my last boat:mad:
I luv my Silent Thunder:D Just a nice mellow rumble that you can talk over:cool:

Ted G 08-07-2002 09:05 PM

Holy crap!!!!!

I left that place about 2 years ago and haven't been back till now. Honest to God, nothing has changed. I just couldn't bring myself to post anything. Trust me-there is no intelligent life there to have a discussion with anyway.

Sorry, guess I've regained too many brain cells since I've been over here:D

buck183 08-07-2002 09:48 PM

Aaaaahhhhh......Come on insptech, you know you want to post a reply on the thread. You can do it! Harry even replied, that makes it even MORE gratifying. :D
