Mares 38 Cat?

Anyone know anything about this boat?

http://www.powerboatlistings.com/view/18042

Besides having (in my opinion, an ugly ass paint job) I know nothing about these boats. My buddy is looking at it for running in the Pacific.

How would it run in 3 to 5's VS a V-hull?

Are they well built? I'd be a bit concerned about the drives holding up.

Mares 10-19-2013 03:48 PM

The Mares 38 is a great rough water boat.
I have hundreds of hours running this boat in the ocean. This one was designed and built in New Zealand when the waters are rough.
In my opinion the drives on the boat will not hold those engines.
There is one in Tampa new paint and upholstery HP 500’s bravo drives very nice boat

Just bought one myself, well built boat probably not the fastest of cats from all accounts but supposedly a really good offshore boat.
Just in the middle of rebuilding the motors so haven't had a chance to run the boat yet to see how fast it actually is.

Does anyone know how fast one of these cats will be with a pair of Merc 500efis on Bravo 1s

Great that will be ideal for my first cat.

Cant comment on perf but the only part about the paint I like is the airbrushed motor...too bad they only have it on one side

Mares 10-20-2013 04:58 AM

Congratulations on your new 38 Mares it should run about 80 MPH. The 38 is a great running boat.

Boy, isn't that the truth. lol

Mares 10-21-2013 07:24 AM

The boat will run well over 100 MPH with 800 HP and that will depend on what engines and drives and how the boat is set up.
There is a 38 for sale on the Mares web site it is also on Yacht World
I can’t seem to post pictures on here any more.

Mares 10-21-2013 04:19 PM

In comparison what speed would a 36 Nortech run with a pair of 500EFIs on Bravos?

At least 100MPH,mine did 115 with 525s Bravo boat.

999JAY 10-25-2013 10:21 AM

So that makes the Mares 15-20% slower than the likes of a Nortech ect. is this purly down to the weight of the Mares?

Mares 10-26-2013 05:28 AM

If you want speed buy a Nor Tech They are a good boat. Mares has a huge cabin, walk around deck ,cockpit, Sun Pad and swim platform and runs great in rough water .It is comfortable and user friendly . It just depends on how you use your boat .

999JAY 10-26-2013 08:29 AM

Thanks Larry I am very happy with the Mares, I was try trying to establish what the differences are between the two hull designs that effect the speed with similar power.
At some point I will be looking for a cruise speed of around 80-90 and was wondering what I need to do to achieve this.

Will changing the drive height and a tunnel tab do anything to increase the boats speed?

315duramax 10-26-2013 04:58 PM

i think thats sweet with the cabin underneath.

Mares 10-28-2013 07:48 AM

The Mercury 700’s would be the way to go. Which boat do you have? What engines are in there now? We never used a tunnel tab never had any reason to get into that.

That`s a bit embarrasing for a cat sorry to say.

Well we figured out why. We had 150 gallons of water up in the bow.

That’s a huge holding tank for your toilet!
Never carry excess chit if you want to go fast. :D

From the last step forward the sponsons are hollow and do not drain anywhere. There are several areas where if the boat was to fill up with water it would be able to go past the liner into these sponsons.. and then become trapped there. We did the math and should be well over 1200lbs lighter now. And over 100 gallons was forward of the helm so that should explain the significant loss of speed and lack of bow lift at speed.
