Hydromotive Props
Has any one used the hydromotive quad 4 props? How did it compare to what you replaced? RPM gains, loss I'm thinking of going from 25p mirage to 23 quad 4. With my 454 330hp motors I can only turn 4200 would like to be 4600 or 4700 rpm. I hear the quad 4 is better in high chop mirage is better in flat water. Any info will help.

Tell us more about your boat and how much trim it requires to run.

My Cuz had a 35 Fountain w/Twin HP500's and 27 Mach Sterndrivers...went to 28 Quad 4's and picked up rpm's and speed. But we all know Mach Sterndrivers make great jetski anchors:D and that's about all:rolleyes:

My 29 Fountain is very hard to plane with a 25 Mirage, but gets on plane easily and runs nicely at 5200 rpm WOT with a 24 Hydro. (Top end speed is a bit slower than I'd like though.) On the other hand, I had a blade fail (cracked, didn't come off) on the Hydro without having hit anything.

1989 Formula 272 7.4 330 hp 300 hr on the hole package. The boat is real nice I just don't have any top end 55 mph at 4200rpm. The more I trim the bow just porpise?? the hole shot is ok even with a full load of people. add a littel trim the bow comes up a little, the hull loosens up alittle and thats it no more speed just 55mph. 25p has to be to much prop. What did Hydo do about it? |
Hay I have a Labed 24 LH Q-4 Intimidator Hydomotive Used it on one poker run I don't have a nead for it anymore and looking to sell if your interested??

I'm thinking that the hydro won't be your prop. My guess is that you are going to want more bow lift than what that prop will provide. Does anybody know if there is a 21" mirage? I'm not sure where the numbers end. With the 330 you can spin it to a point just under 5000 rpm-but NO MORE. I don't think a 23" mirage will get your rpms to that point. You could also try the revolution 4. It's basically the Bravo 1 but in the smaller sizes and pitches.

BTW-I broke the ear off a hydro prop. I had the prop for 3 hours when it let go. My theory was that the prop was surfacing and it cause the prop to work harden. This proably won't be a factor on your boat.

Russ -- I'm going through the same thing right now. was running 25 mirages at 4200rpm --tried hydros 21's @5200 ----now mirage plus 23's @ 5100. I was very surprised that 2 pitches would bring the rpm up 900!! That also brought me to 60 mph, rather than 52 with the 25's. I might try the 23 hydros next, would like to be in the 4800 range. It's amazing how much difference there is in the bow lift, and where you have to run your trim at, between the 3 and 4 blades! Good luck

We ran Hydromotive 28 lab finished props on our Outerlimits F2-07 Wild Child for 3 years befor we cracked one blade. Those props took a MAJOR beating before the crack finally appeared.
Bronson Hill did the lab work for us. Highly recomended!!! Dave |
It depends on what your hull likes. As Cord said you'll get more bow lift with the Mirage. More transome lift with the Hydromotive. My old boat had way to much slipage with the hydro. and a very rough ride in Choppy water. I went to a Mirage and got more bow lift, the hull loosened up and handled much better.
A Mirage plus is the same as a Mirage, it's simply cupped more. Making a 23 pitch act like a 24 when you are up on plane. |
RUSS SR1,
Give Jerry or Cathy a call at Air Marine in Chicago. They are on South Central Ave. around 57th St. They have a prop demo program. He doesn't do much with the Hydro's. He would have the Bravo 1 and Mirage plus. He is very knowledgeable. His number is 773-582-0100. It's better to try props before buying. He is very competitive on pricing also. Tell him the Candyman sent you.:D Dan |

Yea I looked last night. You can get 'em all the way down to 19". The Bravo's stop at 22" with the revolutions picking up the slack.

Thanks for all the info.
Dan I will call Air marine and see what they have to say. Russ |
My advice is to call Hydromotive... if you can only turn a 25" Mirage (is it a Mirage or Mirage Plus?) 4200rpm's .... you'll need to go smaller then a 23" Hydromotive to get to 46-4800rpm's... Rule of thumb.... a 24" hydromotive is really a 24" prop.... a 24" Bravo One is really a 22+" prop.... a 25" Mirage or Mirage + is really a 25" prop.... ask Jerkury why:rolleyes:

Rev4 17, 19, 21, & 23 pitches only (a 23 Rev will turn like a labbed 24 Bravo 1)
http://www.offshoreonly.com/forum/sh...threadid=30398
I had one (Rev 4 23 pitch) they have less transom lift than a Bravo 1. If you can find the pitch you need in this prop I would give one a try. |
I called Formula, they said that the boat came with a 25p mirage and it should turn it at 4800 rpm seeing 64 mph.
Candyman I called air marine and what we decided to do is make sure that my mirages are not tweeked, repair the leading edges and see were we are at that point. At least I will have a better base to form my next decision knowing that I am starting from good props. They were kind enough to assure me that if I bring then in Monday I will have them friday for the air show. Russ |
