What is the big deal about the 1350 and 1650 mercs?

Here we go....huge difference...
four words : no more push rods
you can rev them safely and still make power...
Reliability, aluminum blocks/heads, Quad Overhead Cam Heads...liner problems and the rest of the issues that always come along with the 1st generation of motors.
See how long a true 1650hp motor will stay together in a race application, sure 6-8 seconds you can make them last. Sure it's been around for years, but making it live for more than 2 laps, or 25 minutes is a feat. Merc has managed to get over that hurtle but still has some bumpy ground to make up. That's what happens when you do all this new tech at once.
My .02 cents.

I am impressed with the 1650 and 1350 Merc motors, the other blower motors still can make good power but look antiquated when compared to the new Merc motors. Don't get me wrong, I would love a pair of Sonny Leaonard or Sterling blower motors, but the new Merc overhead cam motors are impressive.
And what is a thread without pictures, the Mercury 1650 pictured above the Sonny Leonard 1650, a Poker Run motor (on 91 octane), both make 1650 hp both look good. I would be happy to have either, but the Merc motor would be my first choice.

I'd like to a Pro Stock motor marinized. They seem to have gotten a handle on extreme RPM pushrod motors and you should be able to turn one down to 7k rpm instead of 10,500 and have them live for a long time. Raised large diameter billet cams, stiff pushrods, and stiff mounts seem to be the key.

ICDEDPPL I'm not sure if they are that much more reliable . There is an Outerlimits in Ontario with a pair of 1650s that he blu up in the first 50 hours . Also Tommy at Chief builds a turbo charged big HP motor that I think can go a long time between services. I think the warranty is the only really big advantage to the Mercury deal. Just my 2 .
