Have you ever noticed......???

I just saw a commercial for the new Chevy Suburban. Advertised as being able to tow 6 tons with the "New 8.1 liter vortech engine." Why is it that car/truck advertisers and buyers refer to engines in the decimal equivilent (5 liter, 5.7 liter, 8.1 liter, etc...). But the real gearhead motor guys like us offshore boaters tend to use the US cubic inches monikers?? 350 Magnum, 496 Magnum HO, 454, 502, etc.....

Anyone else ever notice this???? Just wondering.....bored for reasons I will not get into in this post (next post perhaps).

Mike......I never noticed that. :D :D :D :D

I think it would be misleading to the public if they rated the the towing capacity in Kilos (about .45 kilos per pound). Could you imagine the confusion with the drug lords? "Hey...this truck will haul almost 27,000 Kilos!"

The 350MAG, 496HO, 502, etc. means more to me than those stinking liter equivelants.
I know that 5.0 is roughly 302ci (acually 305.1187) and 5.7 is a 350 (347.835), an 7.4 is a 454 ( 451.5757).
I hate the metric system!!!

Hey Iggy,
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. Most people I know hate the newer designations. As far as I'm concerned, liters are for soda and booze bottles, not engines:mad:

Mike..., You think way too much...Relax..., Let it go..., Chill, man... Life is too short to have this much on your mind. Think LOTO  :D :D

We don't need no stinkin' centimeters, kilometers, or any other of that euro crap!:D Although I did recently buy a metric tape measure. It's a hell of a lot easier to find the center of 200 cm than it is 78 3/4 inches.

Mike,

I got a funny one for ya.

I have a customer that has a Chevy HD Dually with a 8.1(I know, 496) in it. Anyway, everytime he comes in my store he finds a way to strike up a conversation with someone about his truck and the fact that he bought it with a 502 in it. I used to laugh to myself the first few times and let it go without saying anything. The last few times I have asked him if he special ordered his truck with that 502 in it? He tells me "nope, they put them in there from the factory now". I proceed to tell him, in front of everyone, that he doesn't have 502 but a 496. Then he proceeds to tell me (everytime) that they are the same engine and it's still a 502.

I have even shown him boat brochures with pictures of the 496 in boats to prove to him that it is a 496 cu. inch motor. Still calls it a 502 when he comes in the next time. Oh well???
