outboard desicion : johnson or mercury?

pleasure boat. performance is not important as fuel consuption and engine-life
around 250 hp

which one would you choose?

a)johnson (omc)
b)mercury

That's a no brainer!

Mercury only! Easy to get parts and service for one thing.

Since OMC went bankrupt for get about parts and service.

Beside that, just look and see what's racing!

I believe Bombardier now manufactures the OMC brand of outboards (Evinrude and Johnson). I would hope that their dealers were getting some training or staff to handle the influx of outboards. Personally, the only reason to own a Johnson is so you can say, "Hey, I've got a Big Johnson." Otherwise I'd be looking for a Mercury. I have a 1972 Merc 50 hp that has never had to have ANY work other than plugs and two impellers in it's ENTIRE life. And like someone said above, the new Promax motors are seamingly bullitproof. Know several guys running them without incident for many hours.

what do you think about yamaha?
they are also very strong

Cord 08-09-2002 04:24 PM

Yamaha doesn't do any HP stuff. Merc is where it's at for new power. If you were looking for something older to build up, then I'd suggest looking at the 4.0 OMC V-8's.

timucin 08-09-2002 04:34 PM

I need new engines.two of them for a friend.

as I told at the begining, performance +weight is not very important. comsumption and long engine life is more important

definetley Merc. If you dont care about real power Yamaha 250 saltwaters are pretty good. I have twin Yamaha saltwater series 225's on my stamas fishing boat. Didnt care about speed, just reliability. From what ive heared the 225 yamahas are better than the 250's, thats why i chose the 225's nothing to do with price.

-hope this helps you
