Would these sell if the big players like Outerlimits or Nor Tech sold a version?
seems like with the push to center consoles these might be popular, a 40 could hold 10 people and still keep the stern drive power

I still would like a big CC with I/O power. PowerPlay made a 33 CC with 500efis. No reason someone else couldnt.
|
Skater even made a deck type boat in a smaller cat.

.
would luv to see a CC with I/O power with a cut-down console for lower profile! |
Nor-Tech does......
http://www.nor-techboats.com/nor-tec...le/4300-cuddy/ http://www.nor-techboats.com/nor-tec...le/5000-cuddy/ http://www.nor-techboats.com/nor-tec...0-monte-carlo/ Intrepid does I/O diesel CCs, not sure if they have done a performance motor I/O |
Nortech can build one with gas or diesel I/O power in all of the new CC models, for some reason eveybody buys outboards.

I LIKE that 420 Monte-Carlo.

http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9f2a120b.jpg MCOB is what you picture shows (mid cabin open bow). I had a 32 Sunsation MCOB and it was a great boat but there are drawbacks: 1. Forward seating is accessed through the cabin (means bending down and crossing through the 4 or 5 ft high cabin). A center console is better for moving around the boat. 2. Open bow area is not ideal for sitting at speed (I would think 30-40 mph would be max on flat water). If you cross a wake at speed the occupants easily could be bounced out. A CC is easier to move to the rear for higher speed running 3. Shade/breeze- one of the best points for the MCOB was the shade/breeze offered in the mid cabin while underway (especially in slow/no wake zones on a hot day). CC's with T-tops offer some shade for the driver (not so much for the passengers though). 4. MCOB to me is a negative on a really fast boat (the 52 OL with 1350's is ridiculous especially with the clamp on bow cover which would make me more nervous in rough seas). That boat was originally built with 90 mph diesels which I thought was interesting but 1350's makes that boat simply too fast to have a hole in the hull! My 32 did low 70's top end and that was just about as fast as I would want to go in that boat. I would think that would be the limit on a CC also since there is less to hold on to at speed. The best part of a CC is the outboard power with long warranties and ease of maintenance. |

It is a great looking boat but it is BIG. The 320 is going to be the boat to have, it seems to be very fast on a single engine and the boat is just as good looking as the bigger 420.

I am very happy with my Monte Carlo. You can have 12 people on it and everyone has a comfortable seat. It is boat you can take the family out on and when you don't have the kids it goes 100 MPH.

One only builds a boat like that if the owner comes first. It's not like "field of dreams".
We've entertained building MCOB for a couple of buyers, but the thing that worries us the most is owner 2--the idiot that makes the mistake of putting passengers up there at speed, and the lawsuits that follow after the mishap. I'd love to see an open bow Apache... Sunseeker XS 2000:
Probably the first "big boat" with a production open bow arrangement: http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/i...ze=450&index=4 |
you couldn't give me a bow rider... period a cc makes sense a bow rider doesn't
|
I've seen a picture somewhere of a Fountain 42 or 47 that was an open bow and it was almost as ugly as that Sunseeker a few posts ago!

I have a 32 mid cuddy open bow and really like it. For the type of boating that we do, it works great. I can hold a dozen people comfortably, and we have a large swim platform to hand out on when we are coving out. I have had crazy thoughts about making an open bow mid cuddy Cigarette/Black Thunder/Scarab. The main part of the cuddy would stay the same, but remove the bed and open it up. Maybe even a retractable or removable hard top cover for the open bow.
|
In hot climates the cabins of any go fast are useless unless generator/ac are running......nobody sleeps in the cabin in Florida 8 months of the year, maybe a few in the 4 winter months. So the reconfiguration of the bow area with additional seats is very practical vs. dead space of a v berth. Some of the recent Cigs didn't even get v-berth, they got the cover girl cabin.
The idea of an insert piece/hard cover is dangerous on the open bow. If it breaks loose at speed it could decapitate passengers in the cockpit! I had a cushion (wood bottom) break loose once and it was like "whoa, watch out" when it came flying over our heads. It wasn't secured properly (user error) and popped up in 2-3ft seas at speed. |
If engineered right a removable panel is no more likely to fly off than a car hood or tonneau cover of a truck is. the upside is that it look a lot nicer than a canvas cover.

Sunsation did a soft cover on one of their 36's that had the paint scheme carry off the deck right through the cover and it looked really slick! |

I never understood the west coast craze of the open bow cats and the blurry lines between catamaran deckboats. Vhull or Cat it would be closed bow for me.
|
For reasons of climate and owner usage preferences, mid-cabin open-bow sportboats have found great success on the West Coast. For the same reasons, I think, they never really caught on east of the Mississippi.

I shot these pic's of a bowrider Donzi at the Houston boat show a few years ago. Although it really didn't do it for me I thought about how awesome it would be to get the kids and grandkids in at the same time to go out on the water. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y28...r/100_1597.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y28...r/100_1596.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y28...r/100_1595.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y28...r/100_1594.jpg See ya, Kelly |
If you are looking for a MCOB then look at Nordic. They make that config in almost all sizes they offer. I love mine. The only thing I don't like is that at high speed the cabin becomes a wind tunnel unless you put the bow cover on.

Velocity makes a 29 with a mid cabin. My friend has enjoyed one for a couple of years and is trying to sell it now as he retired and wants to cut one boat loose. It is a very user friendly layout and being a Velocity with a pad bottom is fast for its size with modest power. If I hadn't gone to a cat I would jump on it.
