Bustle?

This is probably going to open up a huge can of worms, but what is the purpose/advantage of a huge bustle?

jrdonnellyjr 12-08-2013 08:56 PM

What's the bustle?

professor_speed 12-08-2013 08:59 PM

ever seen the the wing on a pro stock car? aerodynamics, at 150 mph the air moving over the boat is very important.

not to mention it makes the boat look 10 feet longer.

caseyh 12-08-2013 11:04 PM

You can count it in the OAL

downforce137 12-08-2013 11:07 PM

im guessing it works like a cowl induction hood, and provides some stern lift.

offshorexcursion 12-08-2013 11:15 PM

Great question I bet a lot of members would also love to know.

Some good reasons already posted

Also a nice way to extend past the sharp props........nicer looking modern "molded in swim deck"

ICDEDPPL 12-08-2013 11:15 PM

It`s the beak of the new generation

boatfreak 12-09-2013 04:32 AM

It's all about air. As mentioned above at high speeds, over 150, you can get a drag on the boat by dirty air behind it.

3pointstar 12-09-2013 07:00 AM

You folks have got it all wrong. The extension is to act an awning so when the sun is high the poor guys that work on the outdrives are in the shade!

I agree it probably is part of the aerodynamics of the boat

carrera1 12-09-2013 08:29 AM

makes the flat transom look outdated so you have to buy the new model:popcorn:

That's what I am worried about, dirty air when I am running over 150. On mine, it was a way to make a 34' boat. out of a 32'.

mike tkach 12-09-2013 02:54 PM

ok,i was sworn to secrecy but il let the cat out of the bag.when the sun hits the bustle it makes the air under it get hot, when that happens a miricle happens and the water around the props turns to jell so the boat goes faster.how much faster you say, good question,if you have 1350 hp engines the boat now runs like it has 1650 hp engines.this is why the people with these bustles go so much faster.now that i have revealed this secret a bounty will be placed on my head as the punishment for talking is DEATH.i felt that i had to report this because of all the bs floating around about these bustles.:cool-smiley-027::bong:

36Tango 12-09-2013 03:05 PM

I have no idea what they do, or how they do it, but I think that they look cool and they protect you from slipping off and landing on a bunch of hardware. When backing into a slip they also seem to make it real nice for boarding. Skater has done a nice job of adding integral steps into the bustle on some boats.

Mike, don't Bogart the Meds man, pass em around!!

Bustles are just the new styling cue, like integrated platforms(Fountain) and "Silent Thunder" Molded bolt on Platforms (Formula) used to be in the 80s.

OH, unless as mentioned your boat does 150+, then I could believe the aero stuff.

mptrimshop 12-09-2013 03:39 PM

What kinda weight do you think they add?

Interceptor 12-09-2013 03:54 PM

Makes it easier to shrinkwrap the boat.

thirdchildhood 12-09-2013 04:29 PM

Most bustles seem to be molded in swim platforms. I like old school flat transoms.

Your boat needs a big bustle if your going to twerk it when it gets rough......

In our case, lift. Take a look at an airplane wing for some reference... The smoother this area is, the more benefit is achieved.

In some other cases the tunnel length is extended. I'd say why, but then I'd get flamed for knocking another brand... So you guys can run with it..:angry-smiley-038:

Why- Go ask Johnny T the difference in Driving Chip Romers old 388 and Now Jon Roths 388. Both have the same huge power. From what I was told, the little longer tunnel felt less squirmy... Then again Pete had told me years ago- that's its a looks thing and now a swim step... Idk lol

Baldie 12-09-2013 07:09 PM

Lol at the dirty air behind the boat. The offset weight that helps the CoD does not help, actually hurts - You can do the same thing with no bustle, as a sharp drop off works just as well. I would love to see the model they run through CAE and show me a bustle actually works minus the weight offset.

To give you an idea on a vehicle.

Tire spoilers can give you around .004
A rear spoiler I have seen helps up to .020
A front air damn can help around .010
Cooling drag is around .030
Mirrors are generally around .015
A smooth underbody can be worth anywhere near .003-.010 depending on the front air damn
A rear diffuser can be .005.

To give you an idea of what vehicles run, a newer truck is a .370-.420 and a car can be as low as .270, IE prius or Fusion.

Funny only thing Pete told me it was that it would cost extra!:lolhit:

Oh and does my bussel make my 338 look fat?

12meter joe 12-09-2013 07:28 PM

I thought it was where fountains put their beaks!

Well that too Sam! Haha

thirdchildhood 12-09-2013 08:36 PM

OK, it seems that a long bustle on a cat extends the tunnel and gives more stability and lift but on a vee are more for swim platforms.

bonesmalon 12-09-2013 08:37 PM

Simple economics! Dropping a cool mil on a 46 cat adds 2 inches on ur tool...adding a 4 ft bustle only costs another 20k but adds 2 more inches by crossing the 50 ft mark! :santa::santa:

Bussels are to not be confused with the tunnel ext. on a Skater. They are 2 different things

dreamer 12-09-2013 08:50 PM

Purpose?

To pry even more $$$ outta rich azz hat customers wallet on an already over priced boat

gofastlvr 12-10-2013 10:34 PM

If I could just add a beak to my bustle it would run so fast it would surely blow the bikinis off everyone in the boat!

mike tkach 12-10-2013 10:42 PM

even yours?sorry,i couldn,t resist

mike tkach 12-10-2013 10:43 PM

that could be the start of a new rap song GOT MY BEAK IN THE BUSTLE.
