That was a bad azz boat. Larry Smith 38. I remember it being for sale about 7 or 8 years ago in Michigan. I think a friend of mine almost bought it, he went on a sea trial I believe.

There are some big power scarabs out there, I just don't recall many AVS versions equipped with big power.

What kinda thread is this ? 8 likes ? C'mon. Look at Rankin Daddies rig. ( scarab 38 or 3 ?) All that motor, dry headers with some kinda surface drives, staggard etc. He said it runs a hundred or so, and when he hit waves he doesn't get splashed. He told me all fountains slash water on him in cross wind. BUT HEY chics love to get soaked, splashed etc. Carry on

Bob Costa owns it. It is a straight bottom Larry Smith Scarab. Staggered Merc 1000s with 6's. Was originally built by Bill Leslie. When he owned it,his girlfriend and 2 other women campaigned it on the poker run circut. Beautiful boat. I was in it years ago. Currently runs over 100. Absolute wave crusher!

It sure is a bad ass boat! I was told Bill Leslie owned my fountain at one time also. Maybe you would know more about that?

O kay So No trash talking in this thread. Just a Seriuos thread huh. You could sum it up as the scarab is less expensive than a 38 cig, but has a lot of the same charachterisitcs. A bigger heavier 38, than a fountain. Dave is putting out around a thousand Pfaff hp per side. That power in a 38 fountain would be North of 120 mph maybe 130. So If you want the bigger wave crusher, the scarab ( or cig) is a better boat for you . And Miami vice was a scarab 3 I believe. These boats were the milestone of their time and one of the sole reasons I wanted a offshore twin screw inthe first place.. Because I saw one of these. I think without these classic boats their may of never been a fountain . But who really knows. .
