308 Skater Ocean Performance

How well would a 308 Skater perform in the ocean? Broad question I know but we are trying to find a full time Florida boat instead of dragging our 40 down during the winter.

I can buy a very nice 308 for less than the other boats we have been considering (older 38 Top Gun, mid 2000 42 Fountain, late 2000 Renegade CC, and the 2001 40 Skater project which I just nuked).

Not keeping secrets here. It's the 2008 blue and white 308 that was for sale recently. It is a beautiful boat but it has to serve it's purpose for me. It needs to be able to run around in the Miami area during the winter. We want to be able to run down to KW if weather permits a few times a year as well. If it's too small then we'll keep looking.

Pros of the 308 as far as I see them
near new and good looking
very economical and reliable
in my price range
easy resale
goes 100mph

Can't wait to hear what you guys think about how the 308, 38TG, 42 Fountain, and Renegade CC compare for Miami boating. All are in the low $100k and I'm sure have pluses and minuses.

A 28 to 32 outboard cat is a perfect boat for Florida. I am on my fourth one now. End of story.

I used to own a 382 formula fastech and my 30 motion ran much better and used half the fuel.

There is a really nice 32 Spectre with 300xs's from NJ for sale on ebay.

I rode in Nascats 30 to Key West from Miami an it was amazing. Very good, Skaters in general all handle the rough well and always seem bigger than advertised and what they really are. His is for sale right now, it does have 710 Ilmors and Indy drives.

Would the ride be any different with outboards?

skaterdave 01-04-2014 07:04 PM

inboard's in general will handle the rough better cause of the added weight. this is a relative question depending on your personal version of how hard you run the cat. food for thought here, might wanna look for a 32 skater b-model, much closer ride compared to a 36 or 40 skater than a 30 w/outboards.

If the 30 with OBs will handle it, I would rather not screw with all the things that come with owning a cat with significant power. I'm looking for stress free boating.

Lake rat Skater 01-04-2014 07:46 PM

Go for it the 30 skater with outboards is a monster through the chop. The 300xs motors are great and you can not go wrong with one. The 30 skater is actually very big for its size when compared to other 30 ft cats and that really helps it in big water.

Is this the 30 for sale? GREAT boat

ILMORdude 01-04-2014 10:50 PM

didn't see the possible sale post. But I believe the aforementioned 30 is still for sale.

TeamSaris 01-05-2014 12:00 AM

It will do just fine, honestly, the boat will take it....after a certain point it just isnt fun anymore. A guy like Ryan Beckley can run a 30 Skater with outboards through about anything...but 6-8s isnt "fun" in anything. Not for pleasure boating. Its a great boat, perfect for Fla. Outboards rule down there

Maritime_Eng 01-05-2014 07:38 AM

If you are looking for a great Florida boat seriously look at the spectre 32. They run really well, alot of pleasure comforts and the winsheild is a huge plus if you are boating down here in the winter.

I know the skaters and all that are fun and great but for worry free fun boating in FL I feel the Renegade is your best option.

It will be a turn key every that just needs to ad friends and beer.

Is there a website where most of these are advertised?

I owned a 32 Spectre w/ Twin Ilmors, it was a great all around boat but pales in comparison to the 30 Skater I replaced it with. Not a big fan of the Starboard Helm & LH throttling of the Spectre. IMO the Spectre is like a Nissan 350z & the Skater much more the Ferrari when it comes to offshore performance cats. It begins w/ the hull construction & layups!

Sadly none that I know of that ypu probably have not already seen/found.

Not sure if you have but send Bob the Builder a message about them. He owns one which I am sure you know but he also has contacts with others who do as well. Maybe one of those is for sale or he can lend a hand in finding one or at least answering any questions you might have about them.

As much as I love my Sonic I have made up my mind that a sport CC is next. At least as long as I live here, it's just a great fitting boat for FL and fun.

If You Wanted A center Console i Also Have A 06 36 Carrera With Triple 250s

flight club 01-05-2014 10:35 AM

the 308 is a great boat. It will handle big water and a blast to drive in it. It is actually 31 x 9'6" and has a wider tunnel then the 32b. If you put the 308 and the 32b side by side you can't tell which is which

plumbers crack 01-05-2014 11:23 AM

According to our president the proper course of action in this scenario is to simply raise your budget. Besides you have to remember that you can sleep on your boat but you can't drive your house so might as well prioritize accordingly!:lolhit:

If not for our president and his party I would not be looking at used boats.

That particular Spectre 32 in NJ seems kind of rough to me. Cracked windshield, "dock rash", who knows what else. The replacement windshield has got to be close to $4500-$5000 and the dock rash; well it depends on what one considers acceptable, but I would bet you're looking at an easy $10K after you pay $100K firm for the boat. Don't get me wrong, its a nice boat but is it THAT nice?
