If they are good enough for Miss Geico and Bill Tomlinson - I think they could answer any questions you had Orthobam if you wanted to persue it further...
http://www.whisperingturbines.com/ Well Whispering and the others on here that have insight into the turbine marine applications - Knot-Right, Arruda ect |
My requirements would be:
A steal of a deal on a turn key boat. Looking for some super rich guy's boat he's tired of taking calls on and just says "come get it". A pre buy inspection by someone who knows what to look for. 1 more year of cat ownership to help my insurance rate. Something 46' or smaller. |
Lid or open?

There has been some discussions regarding inadequate fire suppression systems the and overall fuel delivery and hydraulic plumbing in turbine powered boats and the associated costs to correct.

I like the big turbine boats but they have to be a headache for a recreational boat......nobody keeps them! That 50V that 302 is selling is on its 3rd owner since Arruda built it and its a 2009! Canada Thrust had the turbines removed. Aqua Doll is my favorite and it is one theme that is timeless but that is a big commitment to take out for a day of boating! |

I don't know of one professionally rigged, (as opposed to some backyard job) PLEASURE, turbine boat that has burned, can you name any? Every single one that I know of was in a race application, or shootout, etc... where the turbines were being asked to perform way above their standard operating limits. There is no failsafe that shuts a turbine down if it is being pushed beyond its limits, it will go till it blows and that is what youre seeing out of the race boats. I think they single handedly have killed the turbine boats reps.
1. a fire cannot occur in a pleasure turbine powered boat 2. and that you would never push it near the boats limits |

I'd suggest you're being a little naive thinking :

Then again I don't run valves, pressure test headers, worry about corrosion, never had to do a head job or replace engines every year or two, never had a sea pump problem nor even a alternator failure. If you boat a few hundred hours a year then these cannot be beat. However, if you boat the normal 15-25 hours a year an have a bossy wife with kids then this is not for you. Oh, and there are a lot of petrol powered boats that catch fire each year and the word "limits" is an arguably vague term as one never knows where it is until it's to late which has ZERO to do with the engine selection. |
