Here is a link to an MTI for sale at Mecum next week in Florida. Not sure if it is an absolute auction, like Barrett Jackson, or not. Not quite as nice, but could go cheap.

Remember:

These big production TV and similar auctions are:

First: A Business
Second: Entertainment
Third: Advertising/Branding

Somewhere way down the list: Actual Market Value...
...also skewed as:
Then there is the Buyer's Premium, the Seller's Premium (Commission), the Proxy Bidder's Premium, Sales Tax, Luxury Tax, and probably 6 more fees I can't name off the top of my head.

Contracts are signed on Reserves that don't always match up with what happens on the block and/or TV. (Watch the show Chasing Classic Cars for examples of this.) If they want a similar model to sell later in the auction, they will "adjust" the bid/sale price of the lesser model 1 hour before it; just to motivate the crowd and buyers; and the seller of the first (lesser) model still gets the Reserve price he signed a contract on; even if the "hammer drop price" is less than that Reserve.. It all comes out in the wash (read: overhead/commission) after the books are done if/when the expensive model sells an hour or a day later.

Also auction companies have the ability and right to hollow bid (no actual buyer, usually done from the back of the room or phone) to raise "room" value/bidding up to where they want it.
Half the lots finish/sell OFF the block, and maybe once or twice in the parking lot. (Remember the story of Schuble & the Powerplay Auction?)

I'll occasionally watch a bit of these auction shows just to admire the vehicles; and that's about it.

Also, remember the boarded up GM dealer field auction covered by Rutledge Wood from Top Gear USA?

Cars/vehicles in that field were selling for twice what you could by similar models for on eBay; at the exact same moment.

78 Pace Car comes to mind......sold for like 80k yet it was in rough shape. Search ebay, you can buy 3 ultra low mile ones right now for 80k total!

Sometimes when they drop the hammer on you, you have been HAMMERED! They know ALL the tricks!
