PHENOMENON (so sad)
Cant belive this project is unfinished passed by Al's shop almost everyday.
http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o55321-en.html I hope someone can complete it and show everyone what kind of speeds it can run. |
I remember Al Copeland Sr being quoted in a magazine article as saying : out on the water it is merely a battle of wallets ,
if it takes more money to win , so be it ... |
this would be a great project for bill tomlison of MY WAY fame he has the drive and money to go for the record
|
totally off topic but why do so many of these projects get a wild paint job prior to proving anything ? If you look at NASCAR the teams test and test and then paint the car for the first race. Seems like a bunch of money wasted on bling.
|
that is an amazing boat,i wonder how the opening in the deck affects the air entrapment?
|
Wow what a cool boat. Looked like a six seater?
|
Sad indeed …..
A lot more photos can be found here: PHENOMENON http://sharkeyimages.zenfolio.com/im...74163681-4.jpg |
I really hope someone buys her and gives her the life it should have had.
Such a beautiful boat and a sad sorry. |
Extremely sad to say the least to see this, I still can't believe it. This boat needs someone with the means to complete this boat and own the dream boat of Legendary Offshore Powerboater and Racer Al Copeland Sr., someone like Barry Zekelman of Man of Steel fame. Whoever gets it is going to have a one of a kind boat, that I have ever seen.

He whom has a large wallet could battle Qatar with this beast. Am I wrong?

worky ;) very sad hope someone picks up the project |
This may be a stupid question and I'm certainly not able to purchase the boat but from the looks of it, it is a complete boat. What is left to "finish" her.... I have seen the boat a few times but never running, what is the deal?

I used to drive into town from Williams Blvd. to work and always passed Copeland's place and saw his toys. RIP.

The wing in the front is adjustable and is computer controlled. The theory (and a sound one IMO) is the wing could be used to control the attitude, it could maximize speed and also possibly keep it from flipping over... all based on sensors and possibly a gyro or two.
I haven't been following their progress in the last couple years (if there was any), but last I knew the engineering and tuning of the wing was what was being worked on before family funds dried up. It will take some real engineers (electrical and aerospace?) to complete this, this is not something a couple of resin slingers will have much luck tackling IMO. If and when it is properly tuned, this thing has the potential to run close to 300 mph. I personally would get some universities involved with it. This would be a fantastic project for some engineering grad students... they would have the brains and the technical resources (through the university) to pull something like this off. Lets hope a few guys with big money, brains, and a nut-sack the size of the boat itself can bring this to fruition. It would be a great honor to the late Al Copeland as well. |
I see someone buying the turbines. Then selling the hull and rigging to a builder or big boat sales group to be pieced out.
|
nope ,shes just to heavy they did the right thing .you can't put a bottle rocket up a cows butt. and send it to the moon

Looks like it was put together enough that they did testing. What's missing beside a huge check?
|
That wing concept is very intriguing, I would love to crawl around that thing and see what they did. I've spent the better part of the last three decades immersed in aviation autopilots and I would bet dialing in something like that would be relatively straight forward, a lot of time and fuel for sure. As mentioned earlier, it's all in the wallet!!

Yeah, that is sad! Amazing boat! I would like to see this get finished and see what it can do! Glad I got to see it in person.

May be similar to the Spruce Goose.
|
So did anyone ever find out how much it is listed for?
