I have raced in Puerto Rico in some big stuff. Not sure but in a 30' it felt like the biggest.
Porto Rico (OSS) Cape Cod (APBA) Orange Beach (OPA) Buffalo NY (APBA) Key West (SBI) Ocean City (OPA) Point Pleasant NJ (OPA) You would'nt believe me if I told you how big. All I can say is Im sure it looked smaller from your bar stool !!!! LOL |
Lake Michigan solid 3 to 4' with a big hole every once in a while. I was givin it all she had. Was actually the fastest I ever had the boat. 69.8

1.) Argentina was the biggest in 78. Bill Elswick sank and everyone else survived.
2.) The Bertram here is Sammy James in Key West on a run back from Dry Tortugas. This leap actually broke the boat and it started sinking. He won the race but they had to take the boat right out of the water before it went under. That is a 38 foot boat....look at the exhaust trails...he is on his way down when the photo was taken. 3.) Around Long Island race that was mentioned as the same weekend as the New Jersey race. We raced on Saturday and it took 6 hours and 15 minutes to finish 271 miles. The New Jersey race on Sunday was canceled by the Coast Guard as being too rough. I don't recall exactly what years… Those Chicago Poker runs were a mess.. Out of East Chicago IN.. The ones that scott posted the pods of the little hardtop Fountain in the other thread…
That year I think I had the OSO 38 Top Gun.. It was rough, and a blast.. I ran that boat pretty hard that entire event… Actually put gas in at the lunch to try to keep it from flying so much…. Rough chop, probably 2-4 going north in the AM and 5s going over to Chicago… Serious air time. Anyone not in good physical shape would have likely been injured. The year before I had the silver and red 39 Cig with 700s… I think this was '07… Rough again… Ran it pretty hard… Serious air time was had by all... One of those two years, after the run I'll never forget Inferno Mike telling me he "lost his rub rail" off his 38 Formula… I remember telling him rub rails don't fall off, decks do.. Sure enough, upon inspection...:lolhit: Back years before that.. Miami SBI races… I volunteered as a pace boat in my 28 Pantera w twin 502s… Nearly killed both engines with salt water ingestion that day. I remember standing it straight up trying to climb the swells in the Gov't cut inlet… Probably really 20' in the inlet, 5-8 on the race course. One of the race boats actually had an engine break off the mounts going out the inlet… Insane. We started the fleet… I think only 1/2 followed us at the start. I guess the other half couldn't even see us to know we were starting.. I have more…. This year after the LOTO shootout.. Right after everyone left….the washing machine…. Probably 4' crazy water…. Randy and I left in Bobs 48 MTI race boat, right along side the Low Altitude Mystic…. Strapped in and helmets on….We hauled more than some zzz…. We went past other performance boats like they were dead in the water...Rough but a blast. Me all by myself in the orange MTI-V 42 going from Haulover up to Lauderdale to slip the boat at the Quay for the Ft. Laud boat show….. Ran 40 at points… Swells were taller than the hard top on the boat in the bad spots…. This boat needs a 10' bridge clearance… Yes, I have more stories... |
