26 Redline at 143 MPH

We have been doing some testing with some changes to a new lower unit from IMCO for the SCX4. It has really paid off. We are still working but so far the improvements have been incredible. Sorry for the shaky video but I went to turn on the GoPro and realized that I left the Flash Card on my desk  So we shot it from the back seat with a cell phone. It's a little windy and really cold back there at 140+!!

We are running a GT Performance 1200 with, obviously, an IMCO SCX4, and a Hering 16.5"X38 - 18 degree prop on 93 octane pump gas.

Awesome

fglightning 01-23-2014 08:43 PM

very cool

Keith Atlanta 01-23-2014 08:45 PM

How fast was it with the regular lower?

Fast Shafts 01-23-2014 08:55 PM

Pretty Kool, but PLEASE wear a life jacket and helmet!!!

Coolerman 01-23-2014 09:11 PM

Steve, that is a stout # in a 26' cat.... Congrats. Hope to see ya at loto again!

Speedracer29 01-23-2014 09:24 PM

That. Is. Wicked.

pro27 01-23-2014 09:46 PM

That is great to hear, just put that drive on my 27 Progression, still doing set up but happy so far. What is your opinion on it so far? What changes have you made?

lot of good that will do at 143, and it is spelled wear.

mikebrls 01-23-2014 10:28 PM

you mite need a 160 mph speed soon :)

Australia 01-24-2014 12:33 AM

I love those boats. Awesome speed and comfort and compact.

If I were you I'd try a X-Power design drive. Very efficient, only 11.5HP parasitic loss at those revs - and strong as hell.

If you ran a 16 degree rake prop, will it force the nose down too much and slow you down?

pro27 01-24-2014 06:26 AM

Any pictures of transom and drive set up,again what changes did you make to drive if any?

LAriverratt 01-24-2014 06:42 AM

impressive!!!!

how's the blue/white/grey 26 from near me doing???? few changes on it too.

any new info on the 30?

Thanks, I've corrected it. If you want to be persnickety, capitalize the first letter in a sentence...and I think you mean "Alot"..unless you speak in ebonics.:drink: lol

Twin O/B Sonic 01-24-2014 07:53 AM

KILLER!

Man, that thing pulls hard!!!!

LAriverratt 01-24-2014 08:06 AM

I have not got a ride in one yet...there is one here in Louisiana that I've gotten to take a close look at...cleanest neatest bildge of any builder out there IMO...look at the new red one listed...it has a built in blower vent...no black or white blower hose...top notch rigging all the way around and the performance speaks for itself... someone throw down the money for the 30....it'd have to be one of the best 30's ever if the 26 is any indecision of what they can do!

Thanks for the compliments. The X-Power is a nice drive. Very expensive though. I actually helped a friend of mine set one up a couple years ago. Would love to try one but don't want to spend the coin to TRY it.

As far as the 16 degree rake, with less power the 16 degree does not carry the nose very well. On this boat, the 16 degree will lift the tail so bad that it actually plants the left sponson in the water up to around 100 then it starts to carry the nose. It runs decent but is quite a ride, especially once you get off the throttle. The 16 degree will make the boat skate around a lot on decell.

IMCO added a leading edge extension to the skeg and then blueprinted the lower similar to what Wilson does. The leading edge addition was actually developed by Brad Stewart at E-Ticket to help stabilize the SCX4 on twin engine applications. With the leading edge, we are able to run with less torque tab. We then spent about 10 hours massaging the skeg and are able to run without any torque tab at all. Prior to these changes, we had to run a ton of torque tab to prevent prop blowout and the boat would only run 135.

We still have some work to do on the skeg. Fairly certain that we will get 145-147 out of it on pump gas.

I will try to post some pics of the transom and lower unit before and after later today or over the weekend.

TeamSaris 01-24-2014 09:10 AM

Absolutely love it. Dying for one of these as an LG boat someday. Be a cool rocketship with one of our 700s in it....Prop it to accelerate and have a nice 110 mph missile.

I remember playing w/props on my first 100 MPH boat. Like most, I was only after WFO #'s.
I ran from 22's to 32's and validated what a really smart guy once told me."The rig will want what it want's and more pitch doesn't necessarily mean more speed".
Ended up, 3 MPH's covered from the 26 to 32 but the 26 was an absolute blast to drive!

Most have no idea.
I never lost a race in that boat when going from a 30/40 roll and taught me a great lesson.

I like your thinking ;)

CLA 01-24-2014 02:23 PM

Steve,
Congrats on the 143 mph. We have talked many times at loto. I have the 25 Daytona with the ilmor. I run in the c1f1 class.

If I send you my imco lower can you profile and add a tq tab to it? My steering crabs over 90mph.

Your pm box is full

Cat & Mice 01-24-2014 03:00 PM

Super Impressive, Steve!!

Love your boat and the acceleration is crazy in this video.

I deleted everything out of my PM box but it must have to reset. I still can't PM. Give me a shout at the shop and we can discuss your lower. (205) 672-8763

Did you do the work to the skeg or did IMCO do the work?

Amen to that...long live punch!
Give me the small wheel anyday...besides that, the days where I can String the Kryptonite out to 90 on our busy lake are few and far between...,.put a short poke into the 80s is easy :)

Skeg

IMCO added a leading edge extension to the skeg and blueprinted the lower. Then we massaged the skeg in order to reduce the torque steer and avoid prop "blow out". With a cleaver style prop, the torque steer causes the drive to run cocked in the water which blows a hole in the water through cavitation. This hole will cause the prop to blow out. The work that IMCO did only helps the situation and is really for twin style applications. It does not do anything to help with the torque steer. We reshape the skeg to get it to hydrodynamically pull on the left side of the skeg to get it to run true in the water. We normally build a torque tab onto the skeg to push the drive straight. By reshaping the skeg, we are able to use the water to pull the skeg straight which creates less drag.

Here are some pictures of the original lower and the modifications that IMCO made. In the original lower, you can see the torque tab that we were running before. This does not show the modifications that we made.

you shortened the skeg also ?

offshorexcursion 01-27-2014 10:16 AM

Sorry I am confused on which pic is which?

Can you please post pics of the

Original SCX-4 lower from IMCO

The New updated SCX-4 Lower from IMCO

Your Version of the newer updated SCX-4 Lower

Thanks!

No. The skeg is full length. That is just a picture of one that IMCO did with a shorter skeg. Ours has a full skeg.

This is the Stock lower with the torque tab from IMCO (we designed the torque tab and they integrated it into the casting for single engine boats):

This is the modified Lower as it was from IMCO with the full length skeg (forgot I had this one before our modifications):

When we finish the modifications, I will post pics of it as well. Probably be a couple weeks. Too freaking cold to run again for a while!!

Brother that is ROLLING in a 26' boat! Wear the Lifelines and be careful cause that is honestly as fast as I have ever heard in a boat that size.

johnlomant 01-29-2014 05:39 PM

I guess we will have to reshape my drive next and see how fast she really is,

Congrats on the build and awesome performance. Your boat seems to be tracking true and stable. You've obviously applied your considerable experience and talent to come up with something awesome.

Now please just apply some additional dimension to the project's benefits -- and you'll truly have things dialed-in.

Congrats again, have fun and be safe.

I have it for sale but its going to take full price to buy it. I love the boat I just put everything up for sale mental problem I have. :thankyouthankyou:

pro27 01-30-2014 05:13 PM

Great info thanks for the updates. Just wonder what the difference would be on a V hull if any? My skeg is standard from IMCO with the torque tab.
