Here is my take on it. A lot of guys are asking why it took OL so long to make the attempt. I'll bet that most have no idea how much it costs to make a sanctioned run. I would say it's several $100,000's by the time it is all said and done. With the way that not only the economy, but the new boat market in general, has been over the last 6 or so years, OL probably couldn't afford the huge investment to make the run. Not a knock against them, but its the harsh reality. We have seen that that business model is not sustainable. Let's be honest about it. What is OL really going to gain if they do break the record? I doubt they will sell more boats. I also doubt that guys aren't buying new Fountains (cause you can't) over new OL's because Fountain holds the record. They are just not the same animal.
Now, I think it is absolutely awesome that OL is going for it. I sincerely wish them the best and hope they not only crush the record, but do it safely. That would eliminate the Fountain guys only argument in the Fountain vs OL. I'm not knocking Fountain because i think they are excellent boats as well. We have, and will continue, to build power for and rig tons of them.
I think that OL will break the record. I don't think they will sell more boats because of it. However, it will help all of their boats in the future with the knowledge that they gain from this boat. Luckily, the economy and the OL's business is to the point that they can afford to do it. Mike has said that he would not sacrifice his business for the speed record. Guess that's why he is still in business. There is little financial gain in it, but there is a ton of bragging rights to it. And honestly, it's the only negative thing that anyone can say about OL, if you even consider that a negative. I don't and it surely wouldn't stop me from buying one. Just because you can do something, doesn't always mean that you should. Sometimes, you just have to wait for the right time and circumstances to present themselves.
Best of luck guys and be safe.
