If they do, who in this business has a warranty that covers $55/hour labor (not as John the owner says $65) at a maximum of 10 hours? I just got billed for trouble shooting a new engine block a labor rate of $85/hr with the marina rate being $145/hour for 8 hours labor. Total with tax $1,260.05. So what did that include? First use of the marina and shop. Also labor checking for spark, fuel pressure, ECM, spark plug wire set, distributor and cap. John said “put distributor cap back one tooth or forward”. Made it worse. Mechanic thought it was most likely crankshaft position sensor. But this is new engine block! How could that be? Hook up Mercury computer for fault codes. There were none. Install crankshaft sensor from old motor, reset distributor timing, sea trialed and engine ran fine. John always blames it on some one else. Said “We have had several issues with these CKP sensors, typically they’re damaged during shipping, or during engine installation, I cannot recall any instance where a CKP sensor had failed”. He only likes talking on phone too to avoid documentation. What John was willing to offer was “1 hour for diagnostic and another for labor”. Said “it’s a 15 minute job we’ll up our warranty labor rate from $65/hr to your actual labor cost of $85/hr as a gesture of goodwill the crank sensor sells for $118.08. I’ll credit your charge account, or send a check in the full amount of $288.08 per warranty upon receipt of the allegedly defective CKP sensor, or we could send a replacement sensor (R020038, in stock in NJ) and $170.00 for labor.” Wow! Goodwill?? I said to him “I wasn’t even asking for the full amount. But you’d rather fight me over this. If you made 30% on the engine you made around $1,200. Your policy covers up to 10 hours at $55/hour (which is unheard of), plus parts. The right move would be to credit my card the maximum labor $550 plus cost of the part supposedly $118.08. That would cover about half my bill. But it’s your call.” I was willing to settle for 1/2 but now they’re going to fight me through my credit card company. His final offer “As a gesture of good-will, I’ll cover the cost of the part (even though you didn’t purchase one) and up our labor payment from $65/hr to your agreed cost of 85/hr for 2 hours (1 hr for diagnosis, 1 hour for this 15 minute repair).” I am requesting the full amount now. I can’t wait for him to respond because he’ll blame it on me not sending the warranty paperwork through nor the part back. UPDATE 9/20/21: WAS I RIGHT ABOUT PART? Then he tells AMX “Marine Engines has no issue whatsoever compensating Mr. Paulenich”. Lol! Little does he know I have already been in contact with GM Marine because he wouldn’t give me GM Marine’s phone number or address to send part to them. Probably because he didn’t buy it directly from GM Marine. UPDATE UPDATE 9/9/21: Oil dipstick plug came out. Oil all over engine compartment. John says my mechanic f’ed up by not replacing the blue plastic plug with a metal one. My mechanic swears it was metal to begin with and NO Locktite was used to seal plug. Another 2 hours labor out the door. UPDATE 9/23/21 I asked John about serial numbers for new GM Marine block I paid for however GM tells me they haven’t shipped a 5.7 L to him in 3 years. No wonder John can’t give me serial numbers. So he does not buy new GM blocks from GM Marine as advertised. But he charges for a new GM Marine block. BUYER BEWARE!!!
