Oh just to be clear, as for boating down here I don't have the time anymore, becuase of the low Florida wages all I have time to do is work.
So for me I just like reading about everyone else's fun, if I ever get our boat back togather it will be on the market right after the sea trial,,,,,,,,,,,, in St Johns river so I can say its a fresh water boat. Lol |

Just because a CC can fit 10 people doesn't mean it is smart to take 10 people on a poker run.
Say we want to go out with 4 couples (including us). The 4 guys go out and run hard/poker run/whatever while girls are getting massages/gossiping/getting ready and then we pick them up and the 8 of us go boating together. With a CC I can do that all with the same boat, with a sport boat I couldn't. With a CC I have room for 4 people to safely run hard and then 8+ people to relax comfortably. I'm not selling any one on a CC but that is one of the many reasons a CC worked for "me" that I hadn't read yet. |
One other thing not mentioned is the fact that having a sport boat often is about going fast, especially faster than most others. If you are that guy and don't have cubic dollars you will not be anywhere near the head of the pack. So once you lose that, you are now looking for more utility, so a center console looks real good.
|
There are even some center console specific poker runs now....

Interesting thread.
I just bought my Formula the end of last October. All these factors that you guys are talking about were part of my decision. I am afflicted with the "go fast" gene, and so my first looks were at some serious go fast boats. The gf fully supported buying whatever I wanted, and I did look at some of the cc boats. In the end, I gave up some speed for a boat that fits MY usage. I've got a ton of room, goes quick (ok, not compared to the blown cats, but 50+) reliable, and has a comfy place to sleep and take a shower. I've had 4 couples on the boat for a nice easy sunset cruise, and plenty of room when all the women need to use the head. (Sorry, but every trip it's one of the wives/gfs that uses the head) Had 10 (including kids) on a couple times for the xmas parades. Seats 6 for dinner/drinking (at the dock). And I've used it as an "office" to do some work when I wanted to relax and be left alone. These were the important things to me, and the reason I bought the boat I did. Your mileage may vary. Point is, there are quite a few boats in between the purist go fast boat and a fishing boat. Some of the cc boats are interesting hybrids. Less of an Escalade, more like an X5. Doesn't do anything perfectly, but does a lot of things real well. |

I'll be spending a lot of time this season on a 34 Nor-Tech CC with twin 300's at LOTO. Last 8 seasons were spent on a Sunny F-4 and a Formula 350 SS. Will be interesting to see if the CC is a nice middle ground between the two previous rides.

This is by far my favorite boat.
Nor-tech's 420 MC is a Beautiful boat that has Seating for everyone, Cabin, "Center console" so the sociability of this boat is a huge plus and last, this yellow one tops 100mph.. http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g8...e_lead_big.jpg http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g8...ef3e4c457d.jpg |

Can you loan me it.....I promise.....I am good for it. |
Mine is all around budget friendly. Twin Opti's will get 4-5 miles per gallon (cruise speed). Paid $35k on a trailer. She isn't new, but probably won't find anything else out there close to it for $35k.

You can get 4-5 mpg? That's better then a Diesel.
What will something like that run speed wise? Btw Doesn't that one have a small cuddy up front? |
The boats top speed is 65 when propped for it. I will be trying some different props in the spring, but right now it is propped for about 62-63. I mistyped, it is probably closer to 3.5-4 MPG running around 35-40 MPH. (I am basing this off of the previous owner and other information I have read in regards to theta boat and optimax 225s). Pete280 is the previous owner, and had it in salt water so I may have to prop it a bit different. The Opti's are very fuel efficient. The concept does have a small cuddy up front. It is basically a v-berth bed, with room for a port-a-potty underneath a cushion, Not much else. But that's all I need in a cuddy is a place to sleep... But this is why I have plans of a small camper top that will extend to, at least, the helm. Just to give a little more space when needed overnighting.
Showtime83 has a similar setup and has seen close to 70 in his, here in the Detroit River/Lake Erie... |
On the plus side bodies are really easy to throw overboard.

Nate, sounds like you spent a lot of time looking for and then buying what you don't want. But your GF has to like that huge cabin in the sonic.
Not picking on you. When I look at the MTI and statement CC I do not see a boat that is easy to clean. They have a ton of vinyl/ leather, I remember seeing a picture of the one with colored grout floors. That can not be a easy clean. I do get having a modern four stroke outboard but I believe you still need to flush those don't you? How much more fuel efficient is a boat with triple 300 or dual 300 compared to a 600-900 total HP go fast? |

I agree about the cleaning, and quad verado 300's use more fuel than twin 600SCI's and are slower, but Nortech will build you a CC with I/O's so will statement, Midnight Express...

These guys ran the BVI poker run a couple of years ago. Too funny. Had to see it to believe it. I'm not sure if they got up on plane or not? Also not sure they know what a life jacket is but they sure were having fun.

Only person I need to prove it to is myself, since I pay the fuel bill. But if you do some research you will find the Optimax is one of the most fuel efficient outboards made. Showtime83 has a 30' concept with same motors and he has seen similar fuel economy. Also read my follow up thread where I corrected myself by saying it was closer to 3.5-4 MPG. Sorry your much heavier, less efficient hull with heavy diesels get worse MPG than my 4800lb boat with light outboards. You are comparing two completely different animals. Your boat weighs almost 2x as much (9800lhs in the test I read online) and has a 10' beam and is 7' longer. Knowing you are seeing 2.3 MPG in that (test I read says 2.6...) I wouldn't be shocked to see over 4 MPG at cruise in mine.................. The 36' Concept with 3 optimax 250s sees aprox 2MPG at cruise speed. Again, mine is 6' shorter at least 1k lighter, 1 less motor and mine are 225s not 250s. |

So let me get this straight..... You "case closed" a point about poker runs when people who want a sport CC repeatedly said they don't do poker runs........in this exact thread.
Thank god you build a great boat cause the common sense or two and two together isn't quite there. I think he was trying to show that the CC's weren't the first to the dock.......as the faster boats usually are. |
