WaterProof Boombox
http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...9#.UwvEkvldUnE
The way the Kryptonite is laid out, a real stereo isnt really an option. Hoping something like this could be an alternative for sitting in the bay. Looks great, price is right, but 3in speakers make me nervous. Sound quality is a high priority. Anyone have one of these? How's it sound? Would like to hear about any alternatives to it as well. Thanks! |
An AC Power adapter on a submergible seems scary :) Can you get to a west marine to hear one in person??

That's what Im hoping. Honestly Im not too worried about the waterproof aspect, sound quality and durability is #1 |
how bout skip the stereo and just put in a Bluetooth receiver and amp/speakers? My next install in the Scarab will have no head unit and all bluetoothed off my smart phone. I do that now with shop tunes and just about all my listening. For working in the shop i was thinking about a pair of bluetooth headphones so i can still hear calls. As it stands now i use regular ear protected headphones with FM but prob is i cant hear the phone.
Theres gotta be something like this that goes right to line level outs so you can skip the head unit and go right to an amp. AudioFN should have an answer http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Alu...FSISMwodrWkAzA |
Yeah but does it have dual dubbing like my awesome 10 D batteries boombox!!??

your missin the rollerskates....

There is literally zero room for speakers. Purpose built raceboat. We could get really creative, but there is always the chance she will come back out of retirement...and offshore racing ruins ALL stereos lol.
Sticking with the boombox route. |
Stereos and speakers pretty much never get wet unless directly slashed on purpose. Boom box can be taken out of boat when not used so moisture when stored between use not a big deal. What about getting a nice high quality boombox with a cord and buy a power inverter for the cig lighter to power it? That is what I would do if not putting an actual stereo in it.

I remember someone made a portable speaker for beach parties running off a car battery. It was apparently super loud. I have not looked, but I am sure you can find it if you search on here. From what I remember it was pretty expensive like $700-1000 I think.

Thinking the 4-c batteries can't sound very good or loud.
I actually have a portable sounddock by Bose that sounds awesome. It plays loud for about 4 hrs plus I have a 2nd battery just in case! Has a remote, bought a Bluetooth adapter so I don't have to leave my phone on it in the sun. Set it on the deck or just behind windscreen.. Sounds great.. Lil pricy but it's bose :-) Oh and engines start right up! That boombox is pretty cool though.. Can float with ya! |
|
Sound docks work surprisingly well. Lots of my friends use them, but one our buddies used to work for Bose.
I run my Bluetooth direct to my amp. 4 channel 1000wrms RF d class. 4 6x9s off the front channels and and 1 10" off the rear. Run it off a deep cycle battery. It goes as long as I want to listen to it on a fresh battery. You should charge the battery when not in use though. You could pretty easily build a boombox like that to run off your boat battery or an extra battery. |

Good luck topping this!!! |
Look at the new Infinity One. It plays pretty loud and has a super large rechargeable battery. Its in a ceramic coated aluminum case that will take a beating.
I am the one that makes the portable large speaker that runs for a couple days at crazy loud levels. It's too big to fit in your race boat. It's got a 15" woofer and compression driver for mids and highs. I think the Infinity is what your looking for. Plus it has a USB port to charge your phone. And its Bluetooth. Mike |
What about a dewalt radio, or whoevers battery tools you use? Rechargeable batteries, water resistant, sounds decent, takes a beating, hookups for MP3 players. Kinda seems like it would fit your needs

How much did that run ya if you dont mind me asking? Bose to me means at the very least decent build and sound quality. Really doesnt need to be water proof....just going to sit on the dashboard lol
Also charges phone, but I found $7 Bluetooth adapter and leave phone inside on counter out of sun. Bag was another $50 too. Sounds awesome for size, it sounds really good inside! |
I've got one of these http://www.kicker.com/AMPHITHEATER_Bluetooth and run it off a small $25.00 inverter. Plug the inverter into cig lighter or use battery clips The sound is amazing.

I built this a couple years back and works well. Speakers came off ebay, and most everything else I had. Small amp, an RCA input and a fire alarm battery is all it is. I added a sub, which helps the sound, but really you could go smaller and only run the 6's. I've also seen guys do this same setup, but in a small Igloo Cooler. Saves some weight over the MDF. To keep it from falling apart, I put a couple coats of epoxy on it follwed by some rattle can bedliner.

3" speakers are all the rage these days. Everyone wants them. :D :D
|
X2 on the Jobsite Radio. I have both the Dewalt and the Milwaukee. The Milwaukee has a bit more bass and sounds better overall, cheaper too!
|
Thanks for all the input guys!
|
The XM boom box sounds awsome we have one at the shop it gets plenty loud with great base and runs on D cells or ac
|
How much do you want to invest?
|
Got one of these. Love it so far. Scroll down a bit, Bosch Powerbox. Sub in the bottom, great battery life, tough as nails.

That thing from west marine looks like a POS if you are set on a portable get a quality one, http://www.klipsch.com/kmc-3-wireless-music-system, the little bose sound docks have great sound inside a house but out in the open they don't have enough volume.
|
Way too small to listen around other boats. Great if you wanted to find the score of a ball game but you phone can do that better most likely.
I give it a "thumbs down" Floating a river with little ambient noise and a couple canoes maybe but I would opt for one of the setups using a cooler with car battery and larger speakers for a float trip. Surely you have other friends that can supply the tunes? |
I wasted money on a Sony waterproof boom box several years back for my last boat. BOSE Sound dock is the way to go all day and sound will blow away any boom box or most stereo systems. BOSE online has no interest payment plans. If you go to a BOSE outlet store they sell refurbed products with full warranties for even less.
