need suggestions from a BBC
my BBC 502mpi 1996 needs to be reborn. comprtion test revealed that only one cylinder has got some power left.
i like to go 540 with carb instand of efi. what products you recomened to do so because i saw alot of different makers out there. alos like to get 650hp out of it. |
540 cui would mean you are starting with a new block a 502 block will not push out to 540. I build up a pair of 540s last year for my boat got 635hp at 5700rpms. I used merlin blocks dart iron eagle heads callies cranks and rods with JE pistions. there is more then one way to skin a cat, do your home work use a good marine engine shop to help you with your mechine work.

Stock bore on a 502 is 4.470.

I have this 540ci / 632 hp engine with dyno time only. Flagship Marine build with GM block (short-deck), GM 088 heads, Eagle crank/rods, JE pistons, GM HEI ignition, ASM EFI (take it off if you want), Eikert manifolds. Also now has flat o-ring style valve covers. $12k or let's talk. Will rig it up for a static test demo if you're serious.

You DO NOT need New Block. Like SB said .030 over 4.50 bore and 4.25 crank and you have 540"
I bought almost everything I needed for my builds from CNC Motorsports in SD. Crane cams, lifters, springs, rockers, SRP pistons etc etc etc. Great service and prices. I went .060 over on the bore kept the stock 4.00 stroke for 515" |
Like others said, definitly dont need a new block on a 540 based on a standard 9.8 deck.
