Question Attention all Fiberglass and Gel-Coat Specialist...

I am working on a boat that has a large scratch, (small gouge?) on the hull. The scratch goes pretty deep into the gelcoat, about 1/8 inch. It goes just into the resin(?) layer just below the gelcoat but not into the mat. It has been suggested I use a product called "West Marine System" epoxy, or something likethat. I believe I have used this product before, and it seemed pretty easy to use. I have also heard of other bondo or putty products, (can't remember the names), that would also work. Can anyone recomend which would be the best way to go here?
Thanks,
Gordo

Thanks for the responses guys.
Fred, to answer your question, this a pretty deep cut. I'm thinking I'll just fill it and sand it to get it on the water for the rest of the season and spray gelcoat on later.

Gordo if you can get the color match from the manufacturer then you can probably order the color from them or get it from the manufacturer of the Gell coat. What I would do it Sand around the crack with 320 then Thin the Gell out with Styrene and spray it on. If you do not want to spray it you can paint it on with a brush with out the styrene or even put it on with a trowle. Then paint over the top after it dries with a contrasting color and sand with 320 again, then 600 wett and 1000 wet and buff. Scratch will bo TOTALLY gone and never come back. The west system and others are good but if you do not blend out the edges you will always see the scratch. I say contact the factory because it all depends on how good your eye is as to how well you will be able to match the color. Like should I add yello? Or Brown? or what to tint this out. It is hard to get good matches.
