My 47' was made by the same company ELCO, they started making electric boat in 1896 and still do today. The PT boats ran 80mph and used 160gal of fuel an hour

If I remember correctly the PT boats were based on Huckins Quadrasonic hull design which was accepted by the Navy and was farmed out to Huckins Yachts, Elco, and Higgins??? Huckins only built a couple of dozen and many hundreds were built by the other two. They had 3 turbo'd aircraft V12's at 1200hp and increased in power as the war aged in the end when they were running upper 70's and used like 450-500 gph The nickname was candlesticks as they were made of wood and carried a lot of very high octane av-gas and munitions. I know a guy who's the hugest fan of these as he has a completely restored Huckins sportfisher with the same hull design, she'll come on plane at less than 10 mph. He told me all about the similarities of his and the PT boats His boat is nearly 70 years old and is wicked quick for the age and the weight. There have been several big HP diesel sportfishers he's embarressed running through Galveston Bay using 2 stock 330hp 454's Glenncal thanks for the link, that was very cool!!! They had 3 Packard V 12's Supercharged designated the 4M-2500. They actually displaced 2490 cubic inches. The PT boat was based off of a Vosper designed hull (British) that was then modified. The original trials were called "the Plywood Derbies", Huckins and Elco built them in Louisiana and I think Alabama. There was a third builder too.
The saddest part is they BURNED most of them at the end of the war.... |
the engine crew on these boats knew how to crank up the boost and power i don,t think a single boat ran stock hp numbers these engines are awesome they were used in the unlimiteds for many years and can still be found tractor pulling they easily make 3000hp i always wondered why someone does not reproduce these for high perormance boats today these were high tech engines if you guys ever get to see inside some of ww2 engines especialy the german ones you would be amazed they were a work of art

This 37' woody has a 1939 Packard M-2500 V-12.The craftsmanship it took to build this engine in the 1930's by hand with no CNC machines is unbelievable.I have two apart and they are very cool engines.

There beautiful thanks for posting and please post more..... not many know the amazing talent required to build engines back then ! i,m not impressed with penske,s ilmore turbo v6 indy engine but i am with how ww2 engines were designed(slide ruler) machined(no cnc)and hand assembled they had supercharging that was also turbo geared to the crank the exaust was directed thru the outside edge of the compressor wheel extracting power like the n1n2 sections in a turbine it added quite a bit to the hp of the engine they also had 4 valve heads and varible valve timing

The wishbone rod is used to shorten the engines over all length. This allows the piston bores on each bank to be straight across from the other side.

The centrifugal blower is gear driven from the crank.

Beautiful work! why has no one reproduced this thing? 2 of these in a skater, mti or mystic would be pretty awesome! these are what gave the unlimiteds the nickname Thunderboats when these go by on boost the hair on your neck stands up! DWES you guys are doing a fantastic job please vid the fire up for us . i worked on a few unlimiteds that still ran these and never did understand the slinger spark to get them started ,will you guys still run the 70 weight oil or thinner?

These Engines weigh 3000 lbs each and require 100 Av Gas as fuel. They also max out at about 3000 rpm. The Unlimiteds ran the Rolls Merlin V 12 and Nitrous. Racers would run these engines up to 4500 rpm but they would often blow. Turbines took over for them.
