BIGBREW 04-16-2014 10:23 AM

And on with the debate!! Valvoline 20W-50 Vr1 Conventional and I change it every 15 hrs or so.

Knot 4 Me 04-16-2014 10:25 AM

I run ZMax. No oil, just ZMax. Carol Shelby told me I could!

s022mag 04-16-2014 10:26 AM

For 5.7s I used the merc stuff that you buy at any mercury dealer. I didn't switch to Valvoline Racing 20w50 until I had big blocks. I would think the merc stuff will be your safe bet.

RT930turbo 04-16-2014 10:31 AM

Merc, valvoline 20w50, Mobil 15w50... And on and on. Pick your favorite :)

Your getting ripped off. Just buy a bottle of pure linkite . Put 1.7 oz in a new motor, and it's good for life. Be sure to drain and save before overhaul to re-use....actually never mind, it will last for ever so no need to rebuild

Cheap + works. Next question.

Z06 FAN 04-16-2014 12:19 PM

Rotella 15/40 or Merc oil from the dealer.

zz28zz 04-16-2014 05:21 PM

Wolf's head 30wt,, It'll never let you down...

Just kidding. You can pretty much any of the major brands, just change it frequently what ever you use.

Mr Maine 04-16-2014 06:10 PM

What ever you go with, make sure you change it every 15 minutes........

I'll agree with others....Rotella 15w-40

David H 04-16-2014 08:14 PM

I have run Rotella in every thing I owne. Lawn mower, cars, tractors, motorcycles.:thankyouthankyou: But, never in a boat. How would it do in 525's???

cig92 04-16-2014 09:03 PM

what's the deal with rotella? the diesel oil?

keith2500hd 04-16-2014 09:14 PM

the diesel additive package helps with engine load. spark (S) rated oils contain less ZDDP additives compared to performance/racing or compression( C) rated oils.

Nothing major. It's a good oil, hold's oil psi very well, and is cheap.

Note: they where the last hold out of street oils containing ZDDP, but, they had to succumb a few yrs ago. So, if you have a flat tappet cam, you'll need to go with 'offroad' oils that do contain it.

3pointstar 04-17-2014 06:56 AM

Back in the day -- when we had 9 planets-- my dad started using Rotella. NEVER had one oil related issue. I've used it in my diesel cars with no problems -- it is a very good oil

You will find zddp in oils that will not see a cat convertor, right now that means race oils and better motorcycle oils like M1 V-twin 20/50 or their 4T 10/40 motorcycle oil.

Several years back Mobil wrote a letter to a user here confirming that the V-Twin was their oil most suited for HP marine use.

MissGeicoRacing 04-17-2014 05:20 PM

Royal Purple.

mallatt442 04-17-2014 08:24 PM

Rotella 15/40. I run it in everything I own( 2 Big Block Olds1 SBO, 2 SBC and a502 MPI plus the truck), . Hillbilly logic dictates if it will protect a 14 liter Detroit making over 1200 ft pounds of torque, it should protect the smaller ones as well.... 2500 HD Chevy with an 8.1--I do let her warm up a little when it is below freezing.....LOL!

RP is a marketing company that contracts a blender to make their products and add a dye. I will stick with ExxonMobil R&D's Mobil 1 products

Remember splitfire sparkplugs?

Their HQ is a few miles away and I can assure you thatit is no refinery

rev.ronnie 04-17-2014 10:56 PM

I personally use Synergen in my race engines and motorcycles.

It's very hard to argue with Rotella T though. It's economical and easy to find, as well as an excellent oil.

Hey, you can't blame a guy trying to pay the bills. Personally, Mobil 1. I use Valvoline dino oil to break in my engines though.

On Time 04-18-2014 09:40 AM

I have had V-6's and V-8's since 1982. I have had 2 boats the entire time, and 3 the last 5 years. I have used:
Rotella 15W-40.
Delo 15W-40.
Pennzoil 10W-40.
Last 10 years Mercruiser 25W-40 dino until semi-syn 25W-40 became available. I always change at the recommended intervals or before. Result? No oil related failures of any kind. Ever. So does it really matter as long as its a quality oil???? :eureka:

smckie 04-18-2014 10:46 AM

What is your thoughts on Brad Penn? I have been using Sae 40 with no issues. I pay a fortune for it!! If Rotella works just as well, I would rather use the extra cash for more fuel!!

That is a crock. Where did you ever hear such a thing? They are by no means a marketing company. All synthetic oils are a base oil, which there are only but a few companies that produce the base oil.........Mobil is of course one. The additives are than purchased from a company, most use lubrizoil (spelling?), and mixed together like cool aid. In most cases it's the same for all the oil. Royal Purple buys the additives THEY request and together with much of their own products they produce their oil. Royal Purple began their company as an industrial supplier and trouble shooter. If you had a lubrication issue they are called upon to find a cure. Their biggest customer was and still is Mobil/Exxon. The oil was just an offshoot of this highly successful company. It was started by 3 PHD chemist and recently sold to Calumet Industries which is a publicly traded company on Wall Street. Marketing company, geeeeeez give me a break.
