craigslist payment
I am in the process of selling a muscle car on craigslist, what is the safest way/process for receiving payment from the buyer.so many bad stories about receiving fake bank checks, etc.
thank you |
Escrow.com
If your not able to hand the money yourself... |
Wire trasnfere.
|
wire transfer

Cash is always nice

How ever you do it, Don't let the Car go until you or your bank has the Cash in Hand. even if sh*t looks like the real deal you can still be screwed. Cash in Hand or Car in the Garage. Pick one :)
|
Correct! Best scenario is to meet at the bank! Make sure funds are legit! Like FD says, cash in hand or no deal! If buyer balks, most likely was a scam to begin with!
|
Wire transfer, cash or escrow. if they balk at those options move on to another buyer
|
Wire transfer, cash, or certified check. However if you accept the certified check, I wouldn't release the car or title until bank clears it and that can take up to 1 week. If the buyer is legitimate, and pays with a certified check he knows the drill and should be fine waiting till the check clears.

We just boat a boat through Craigslist. Here's what we did. We wired the funds to the seller's bank a day before pick up. The bank held the funds in essentially an escrow account until we called with approval to transfer the funds after viewing the boat. At that time, the bank transferred an amount to pay off the seller's lien on the boat and the excess to his personal account. If we didn't approve of the boat, the bank would have then wired the funds back to our bank.

Are you doing the deal in person?
Cash is best. Make sure you have a bill verification marker/pen... and/or do the deal in your bank lobby so you can have them verify the cash. I've done this before so no one has to travel with cash: Have the buyer go to a branch of YOUR bank near him with his cash. Have the bank write a bank certified check on their paper which is again your bank. When the buyer gets to town, go to your bank and have them verify the check, and verify good deposit into your account. Your local bank can also call the original branch the check was written at to verify authenticity, so have the buyer get a manager name/number when he gets the check written. |

I once had a guy send me a check for a 40 foot enclosed race trailer, my bank said the check was good, account had the funds to cover. On instinct, I called the Porsche dealership it was written from. Manager apologized for me being ripped off, someone had printed checks with their routing and acct numbers. Told I hadn't released trailer or deposited check, was just making sure. They had 4 calls that week like mine,3 got ripped off. Check was good, signature was bogus, didn't bounce till they hit the other bank....Always check it out!
