mikebrls 06-01-2014 04:44 PM

$ 6500 is still relatively cheap for a new ski with bigger motor

I have had 3 Yamahas over the years but the last one I rented was a whale......slow/bulky!

Some of those supercharged seadoos are ridiculously fast!

Had over 225 hrs on the red one in 3 summers, no problems what so ever. Had a helluva good time with the pair.

Checked them out on Thursday. Different made out of plastic, the big engine one is only 600.00 more. I like them old school handling.

point being that there high performance ski is around 12-14k. they now introduce something at 5k and yes its slow. But wouldn't it be nice if one of the big offshore lines would offer a 32-36 ft v bottom that say did 60-75mph instead of 100mph for 50 to 60% $$$ less. More people may be able to get into boating.

Mid 90s not so long ago when most performance boats came with black motors. Good ole 502mag. The blue motor craze seems to have driven it all up in the name of speed.

BUP 06-01-2014 07:52 PM

yeah its affordable up front until it breaks. Heck some of those jetski parts cost more than boat parts. Sea Doo had their far share of electrical problems as well as computer problems / failures. Also Sea Doo dealerships labor rates are more expensive than a lot of boat shops.

On another note its nice that they brought back mid 1980's pricing on jetski's and hopefully the price is not warrant of cheap quality and a cheap quality of parts. I will add when Sea Doo had jet boats that quality was just average at best especially how expensive they were. Here was few issues - pop rivet rub rails, a lot of automotive style fuses for everything, sub par quality interior, cheap stick on graphics, always a check engine lite on at the dash, electrical issues, neutral safety switch failures or stuck and so on.

Checkmate tried this recently and went out of business.........
Baja did it for years but eventually couldn't make the model work though they were trying to reinvent the market recently by building rental boats

TooLateVTEC 06-01-2014 08:52 PM

Im glad they only do 40, the people that will buy them wont even be able to handle that speed intelligently.

Dads friend at the marina bought one, thing is fricken ugly as sin.

Im pretty sure that's where all our old recycled cell phones went, lol.

I have done pretty good with used Yamahas in the past. The only thing SeaDoo has now is a brake system which is a pretty neat safety item for new riders. These are great entry level skiis at that price point but might not be real exciting after a few rides. I had one of the original red/white Yamaha Waverunners (2 seat, 500cc) and while I thought it was great at the time, it did about 35 mph! The last pair I bought were garage queens, looked great and one even still had extended warranty (3 years old, 17 hours on it and just had a $400+ service/new battery). The wife bought it, got pregnant and never rode it again so when I bought it, it really was new!

Newer Yamaha 4 stroke. You can even get the Supercharged SHO and it still runs on 87 octane...

Dad has an 07 FX HO Cruiser that runs about 60 on the speedo, seat is nice and the ride is very nice.

BUP 06-02-2014 02:45 PM

If you are getting a Yama 2007 and up in which are more reliable skis. The FX HO version had a computer problem 2006 and back - FX HO and the FX cruiser HO. Look for 2007 and above if you are looking at these 2 units.

Those sparks are junk. Find a 96 seadoo HX with the 720 motor. Def a workout. Not equal to riding a standup but way better than a couch.

...or a '93-'96 Wave Blaster. I've had three and they're bulletproof, even with some mods.

It's just about as fun drinking beer at the dock and watching people try to ride it. :evilb:

Wobble 06-02-2014 03:07 PM

I have been running a 2004 rxp and a 2008 rxp-x, they run like clockwork, synthetic oil changes and new plugs every year, super gas and stable. the rxp-x will jump clean out of the water from a standing start, lots of fun with near 70mph peformanace.

the reviews on the sparks have been very positive especially in the handling area. Lightweight with nearly the same power to weight ratio as their bigger brothers when equipped with the option engine

LAriverratt 06-02-2014 03:17 PM

Pay a reputable shop to check a used one out for you. If the seller has an issue with that, you probably don't want the ski anyway.

I've done this with a ski for sale 4 hours away. Seller dropped it off at a shop to get checked out, my friend picked it up there, and I picked it up from my friend's a month later.

Picked up a new 04 sesdoo gti leftover in 06.....plain jane entry model 2stroke runs about 45ish but its been bulletproof. Run it WOT most of the time and pound it hard in the waves when its too rough to play in the boat. Only thing ever needed was a new battery, and regular change of the jet pump oil.
