I'm looking at a 38zx. does anybody tow their boat around the country to various events, such as poker runs?

Yes. You will need a 3/4 ton diesel minimum.

I don`t think anyone here goes to poker runs , we all have cruisers and only stay at the marina.

it is certainly a big boat to tow, nine plus feet wide. Its roughly eleven thousand pounds dry and on a steel trailer loaded for the weekend with fuel and stuff will put it pretty well up there weight wise. Make sure you have plenty of truck and properly set up.

I used to tow a 37 Outerlimits from NJ to FL twice a year for poker runs. We used a GMC 2500 duramax. No issues except we put a bigger fuel tank in the truck to avoid stopping every 2-3 hrs.
