We see it over and over. The 39 Ocean Express. Cig Sam buying an old Cig without power, etc. etc. I will never buy a project boat.

I don't have the wood/fiberglass skills to even start that kind of project. Most engine/drive replacements exceed the resale value alone.

I had a neighbor redo a 27 Magnum years ago. He had paint/mechanical skills, had restored dozens of cars/bikes previously. Rented a warehouse bay like 12 X 40 and ripped into it. A year later he had someone rig it because he got too busy working (general contractor). Boat was just old when he started, it ran but it was rough. Within 2 years he had it restored, back in the water running strong (paint/refreshed small blocks). The main rush was to get it out of the warehouse bay that was costing him $1200 a month. He was into it for 40K including the original purchase price but not the warehouse bay. Used it 5-6 times, the warehouse he stored it in was a major hassle to get the boat in/out of (it was a big 3 car garage, boat had to go in at a 45 degree angle). Sold it for 25K 5 years later. He didn't use it, then when he wanted to use it....it was a huge hassle. Boat was nice but no where as nice as the Powder Keg 27 that was on here a few years back.

If you have a big barn to tear into it (free), a winter or two with no plans and some skills it might work for the right buyer, but for most the project boat is a dream that will never get finished.
