I’ve seen similar.
I think. I think one of the guys at Power Boat magazine used one motor to run two jet pumps back in the day?? |
Very good.
I knew I remembered it and think your memory is very good. These molds are less than 2 hrs from me. The Checkmate molds were half that. Ugh.

I'm fairly sure this was the same boat that was advertised on OSO back in November 2017. He had another one in white and called them a "design based on the Speedster". I think he was selling the hulls for about 25k. (Not sure, memory fade)

Not sure how I missed that post?
Agree w/your comments about the looks of the Speedsters. IMP, One of the prettiest twin in vees of all time. My only ***** was, for my boating style, the cabin was tiny. I know it effects the looks but...... Keep forgetting I’m the only one actually using their cabin as a cabin 😂

then the raised deck version 81-85 that welcraft bought the molds and built with the Excalibur name rights |
I flew out Late 2017 and looked at the red hull (a white one also) in Ohio, molds were still at checkmates factory I didn’t go see them in person. They were asking 25k then for both hulls and the molds.
both hulls were laid up at checkmate, balsa core, wood transom/stringers. I think checkmate built the molds but I’m not sure on That. the molds were splashed off the 27 activator Straight bottom, which is now the rage 28 with a couple steps, and that guy to Toffen in Europe is building some with those activator molds with the newest step design from rage under the activator name. Yes the history above is correct, it was the farmer speedster/Excalibur, then the Wellcraft Excalibar, then the activator 27, then they became this “new” boat which is a custom deck on the same original hull. the red boat was like NEW, an excellent project if you want a bare hull. White hull could be saved but it’s rough. The mold pics I saw showed them like new also. I made an offer in the whole package but it wasn’t accepted. i have contact info for the owners if someone wants it |
This is interesting.
Never seen one if it’s legit. Unfortunately it’s the worst ad ever and only had two pics. listed by POP. I followed the links but didn’t get anywhere but to POPs site which I think requires registration for access. Normally their ads on Craigs are way more thorough. A fairly optimistic price I’d say as well 😉 https://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-Bertra...d/124158428936 |
Peter Rittmaster's resto mod Bertram 28 Baron.
Gary, that Bertram was a total resto 8 years ago by a talented fellow, Shawn Taylor. He started with it being in pretty sad shape, but it was done for the legendary former President and CEO of Bertram Yachts, Peter Rittmaster, so money was no object. Since the boat was cosmetically gone, they took the freedom to do it in a resto mod style. It was for sale 5 years ago for $65k, but didn't sell. We fellows that were on the Donzi forum for years were following it and there even used to be photos of the resto here on OSO. It's a sweet hull design with its narrow beam and 26 degrees at the transom. Whom ever buys it will not regret it.

Love the in-lines. Thx for the pics and history Lars. Another photo of the engines, and a photo of another restored Baron 28 with the stock windshield and original interior. I prefer these original. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2f18d70772.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e301b89e45.jpg |
I’m w/you Lars, I prefer orig but the new one looks good too.
And as we both know, if you can write the check, it can be purple and ugly. 300 HPs from the in-lines is huge. Times two, should be a fun ride. |

I saw that ad and wondered where they/you got that history on the Imperials and Aronow?

I freagin love this thing!
You can tell it was still early enough that they designed the interiors around the top end cars of the day. Hadnt don’t the nautical bend yet. https://www.ebay.com/itm/DONZI-21GT-...E/124174577704 |

Funny how some people are about that.
I built a 100 MPH 17’ vee bottom OB yrs ago and struggled w/that part of set up. Was an open stringer boat w /steering on right. W/the floor being the top side of the bottom, there was no place for a foot throttle on the right of driver. Only place it would work (for Rt hand steer) was for left foot operation. I threw another wrench in the gears when I decided to make the seats convertible. I wanted both, side by seating for lake play and single/center seat for drag racing. Built a grid for the seats w/clevis pins to move them. I then mounted the wheel 1/2 way between where should be for center steer and side side by side. So it was a few inches from both normal locations. Had no clue if any of it would work. Maybe it’s just me but it had zero effect on me. Worked well enough I did it on a 110 MPH 19’ tunnel boat too. As long as I can reach the wheel, trim buttons and throttle, who cares 😉

I hope you have kept a photo album of all your cool, unique builds! And not just the end result, but work in progress
|
I have tried.
But, after just turning 61 w/no kids and no one in the family that gives a **** about fast boats, it stops w/me.

On another note I wonder how bad the balance would be on something like this, that hull was tweeked to snot for stag BBC mounted low and close to the keel. Now ALL the power is behind the transom and high,,,,,,, The CG has to be a mess. |

Last that guy posted was one motor still had issues. The boat isn't worth much more than the motors, nasty interior etc.

Now ALL the power is behind the transom and high,,,,,,, The CG has to be a mess. Im curious what it’s worth. This is one of the most desirable hulls to repower IMO. Someone with an old school straight bottom could put their drivetrains in there and pick up 10-20mph. But that potential has been damped by the OB setup. Someone in the carribean might snap it up though. Im just thinking about my 2 aging higher hour OBs, couldn’t imagine worrying about 4 that aren’t new. |

Id bet it runs good. Shifting the weight back gets it on the pad and well and packing air nicely.
What you said is the same thing me and another friend said off line, most people are running in pretty smooth stuff or if it gets rough they go in or slow down so for how they use it would be great. |

Yes,,, in smooth water. I am wondering more when you start running it like a offshore boat in rough water and flying it.

Thats pretty much how OBs run in the rough, just like you described. You could counteract that with some seriously long tab, but there’s no room on the transom of that boat for them.

Wasn’t on CraigsList. But saw this gem heading out in Boca Grande yesterday.
