I put Shotguns on my boat this year. It made a big difference at idle and some at cruise speed. If you want to spend the ca$h, everybody who has the Teague switchables really seem to like them.

The shotguns work great at low speed,ie: idling in/out of channels, around docks, etc. But, the principal on how they operate is that as your speed increases, the exhaust pressure increases; the pressure from the piston that keeps the flapper closed at low RPM's, is now overcome, and the flapper opens up. Basically, reverting to a low restriction thru hull system. It works great for the low speed & RPM situations, when enforcement for noise ordances typ. occurs. During the low speed conditions, the exhaust pressure is less, the piston pressure keeps the flapper closed, and the the exhaust is forced down toward the water thru the small holes in the bottom of the shotguns. But, if your goal is to reduce speed at higher cruising speeds, the big question is as to at what type of RPM's are you still looking for noise reduction. Installation is very simple and straightforward. In addition, they comply with jurisdictions that have requirements for no exhaust bypass or cut-outs(ie: NY State). The shotguns I have work great, and they are simple & reliable. But, I don't think they are the answer for higher speeds.
