Trailer Bearing Quesiton
 

I have never seen this type of Bearing, Can anyone tell me about it? It has a rubber plug on the end of the cap. My previous boats either had a solid metal cap or bearing buddies. This has just the rubber seal. What kind of maintenance does it need? When I remove the plug I see lots of grease

Probably a "Dexter" E-Z lube axle. The end of the spindle has grease fitting on the end and somehow the grease gets to the bearings. Not a good explanation but a start.

yep ez lube..somewhere in the center of the grease you will see a grease zurt,,get some good wheel beraing grease and put it in a grease gun and make sure its marine wheel bearing grease..stick the end on the zurt and pump it full..the hole goes all the way to the inside bearing and if you keep pumping it,,it will push out all the old grease so keep pumping it until you see the new grease come out..make sure you have a rag over the and under the hose,,it gets messy with out one..

Jack up the axle, wrap one of of those red shop towels around a big screwdriver, and spin the wheel around with your hand. Insert the tip of the towel covered screwdriver, and it will swab out a lot of that grease you see. Then you will find the zerk, Anything you see out by the castle nut is about useless anyhow, and can be pushed out when you fill fresh. (See GIF below for how it works.)

You can do this with your finger, and a rag wrapped around it, BUT be VERY careful. The end of that bearing cover is SHARP and will cut you. Ask me how I know that.

+1 on the sharp edge. Been there. Nothing like a nice deep gash and a fist full of old grease.

Pump the grease in slow. To fast and you can blow the rear seal out.

My trailer has the EZ Lube spindles as well. They are great!!!!
Get some new rubber caps every couple years. They tend to get cracks and grease will spit out. They are only about a buck each.

Every Spring, I get about 3 tubes of grease. Pull the metal caps and pump in new grease until all the old grease pushes out the front.
Its like repacking bearings at 10 mins a wheel.

One thing I noticed about my EZ lubes, when I had the seals replaced by a shop, they drove the seals too far into the hub/spindle, this ended up covering the hole and all the grease pushed out the back of the seal.
