Market Analysis Game.......500K to spend
 

Hypothetical game here to gauge offshore powerboat market direction. We all know that Performance CC's are on the rise so by this analysis lets see what type of boat people would put their money into.

Rules:
$500,000 budget to spend but that includes maintenance/repair/insurance/fuel/storage for 5 years. You can buy any type of boat new or used but you can only buy one boat and you have to keep it 5 years. You do not have to spend all the money and you get to keep whatever is left over combined with what you sell the boat for after 5 years (this is where the decision trend comes into play).

Examples:
Buy a used late model 39 TS/TG 700 boat for 300K, use the 200K left to run it and sell it for 175K at the end (175K net at the end)
Buy a 41 Apache for 75K, redo for 200K, spend the other 125K to keep it running, sell it for 125K at the end (100K never spent +125K end sale = 225 net)
Buy a new 38 Statement for 260K, under warranty the whole time, spend 40K on fuel/40K on insurance and sell it for 125K in the end. (Net 285K in the end)
Buy a canoe, bank the $499,500 and have more money than any of the 3 above and buff arms to show off from all the paddling!

Used Nor tech or MTI cat in the 48-50ft range with as modest of power as I could put in them, OR turbines. I'd want reliability.

I'd hope to be around 200 at that point.

Statement CC. Not even a second thought.

Prob a 38' with trips. Only real question would be cuddy cabin or no.

Turbines are very thirsty when upkeep is in mind.

We filled up 3.5 times in 2 days with the statement 50 turbine.

Easy.
Buy an 80k boat with 20k for taking care of it and whatever. Take the 400k and buy a house on the lake........

I would go: 38 Powerplay (one listed last month was 150K), repower with Merc 565s and Imco's......then just pump the fuel into it!

If I was smart: 327 Intrepid Cuddy- about 225-250K new w/twin 300's.

The point of this is: Even with a gift of free money (500K) people still aren't buying new performance boats.........:mad:

I would buy a see doo spark for 5300.00 allow 4700.00 for gas and insurance the next five years. Sell it for 2k when done and pocket 492k :)

First repower go to something 850hp ish and try to enjoy trouble free big water boatingfor awhile.

Not a single new performance boat purchase so far......even with free money!
One performance CC purchase (two if I was to buy the Intrepid instead of the 38 PP).

If people won't hypothetically buy with 1/2 million in free money, you can now see why the manufacturers are struggling to sell new performance boats to buyers using their own money! I also think a 500K budget is insanity, you can buy several new performance boats at that price point yet no one did.

OSO is a very diverse group, I would think a performance boat manufacturer who posted this exact question would get an idea of how tough this market really is from top to bottom. Can you imagine introducing a boat like the OL 36 (dead middle of a 500K budget, newest boat in this segment that I can think of) and not one person thinks of your product? AT 33/37 , Sunsation 32/36, Cig 38 TS TG? Hustler 29/38? DCB/Skater smaller cats? Could you imagine designing a new hull, new paint/interior concepts, new Mercury power and then giving someone 500K in free money to buy it yet they still bring up a 30 year old 41 Apache as their chosen option?.......HUGE KICK IN THE NUTS RIGHT THERE!

If I had the ability to post this back in 2004 I suspect there would have been lots of new boat orders! Powerplay, Sonic, Spectre, Fountain, Donzi, Baja, Black Thunder would have all been answering phones back then!
