Are there any "trusted" marine crate shortblocks out there? just curious...
Looking at what I am going to spend making my 548's right vs. crate shortblocks, some shortblocks look good price, just wonder if any are worth it or if there is a trusted place for me to compare, chances are I am going to redo my own as I like to know want I have, but if there was a trusted builder offering I might go that route for cost reasons... after tossing a rod I am looking at a total build on one, and who knows how hacked the other might be, didn't tear it down yet...
just curious to cost comparables...most likely going to build what I have then I know what I have..... |
There's a good engine builder up my way that does a lot of boat engines. The shop's name is Gorden Race Engines. He just finished a pair of blower motors for a boat. I don't know what they dynoed, but I could here em when they were on the dyno from my house. To say the least, they sounded badass!

I build my own and have a good machine guy just wondering what's out there to compare, sonetines cost more to make stuff right then to buy one done (2) lol
I see prices of 45-5500 for dart shortblocks and I can have 8-10 into redoing mine fixing all the crap the previous person messed up is why I ask, I could buy done and sell off mine in parts to recoupe just idea... |
I'm the same way. That way you know what you have. I'm gonna pull my 350 this winter. I already found a car water pump on it. Also, after I bought the boat and wired in my battery selector I noticed the alternator wasn't working. I called the shop I bought it from, and they said "Our customers do t care if we use automotive parts or marine parts."

Any "crate" long block or short block beyond a 502 is going to be a small builder anyway. I don't think that falls in line with the mass built crate engines typically considered a "crate." That being said, I had very good luck with the marine 502 crate when they were available. Assembly line built with marine parts and tolerances. Put 2 together stock with single 4's and had great luck. Took another, upgraded valves, cam and head gaskets and ran 8-71 for nearly 200 hours before popping a head gasket.
If you are looking for a 500+ ci short block, so you are still going to be dealing with a small marine builder that ships it to you in a crate. |

Just that I saw some assembled shortblocks for around 4500 or so, that's about what it's gonna be to replace and redo one engine for sure and I didn't see how hacked the other is yet...I am doing both

Doesn't Chevrolet offer 572 crate engines? Maybe they sell a short block version

My father in 2007 bought a set of 540 cu.in. Dart short blocks from Ateco. My father then died in the middle of putting the engines together. We (I and my mother) sent the motors to Innovation Marine for assembly and dyno. Ateco delivered what was promised, my father was happy with what he bought, but he was unable to see it to conclusion. I never had a problem with the 540's after assembly but I ran the motors less than 30 hours per the ECU (I thought maybe 15 hours), so 540's did not have many hours, and I did not run them hard when I did use the boat.
I think the short block is the way to go, if you have the requisite engine know how, tools and capability of assembling it to make it all work, live, and make horsepower (debugging and tuning properly). My $.02 opinion http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o58607-en.html |
