Parents lived in HH for over 20 years. Been to MB on numerous occasions including Bike Weeks. HH is one of the most unique beach front areas in the US and its by design in their codes and zoning. Businesses are not allowed to have lit signs like McDonald's etc and the landscaping also blocks the view of businesses like Walmart. You will drive down the major roads and almost not know there is any commercial businesses there. As a matter of fact trying to find things in the evening can be quite daunting because you can't see easily what your looking for. Very few street lights. HH is more pricey than MB year round. HH has its crap areas but in general more upscale. MB is like any other built up sea side community like Virginia Bch, Ocean City or the Jersey Shore that caters to the middle class. There are tons of typical tourist trap places like miniature golf and seafood buffets along with some unique areas like Murrels Inlet to the south and Wilmington to the north. I'd go with HH because there is no other place like it in the country. Charleston is a very worthy choice too but HH more unique.

We stay in north myrtle where it is a little quieter. We figure we can always visit the crazy of myrtle proper, but don't want to stay in it. No interest in karaoke

Charleston is worth the trip!
