Never understood that myself when there is two great builders with in 3 hours.

Engine Research Inc in Cobden. Builds a lot of DIRT motors sprint and mod. Has done 383's and 427's I've run in a Chris Craft and now the Regal. Currently building me 556's as well. Has done some 454's as well for Marine. All in all he's built 100 motors for my father before he passed, majority of them in the Marine application.

There is a builder in Toronto as well that just isn't coming to my mind.

I'll say it again anytime you see a marine engine builder and or a marine tech using silicone on engine parts or even on the outdrives , its a builder and tech you want to stay away from completely. In the industry they are called shadetrees.

Pfaff used silicone on my intake. They must have to pull them back apart a lot. I have had good luck with great stuff. And Randy FYI . I am just using my motor for a bench right now . lol ;)

Randy Nielsen 01-20-2015 07:39 PM

Mcprodesign, I have always used silicone on the intake where it meets the block & see no problem with that. But silicone on the front cover, both sides of the oil pan gaskets, and trying to seal o rings with it is not cool. That's what was going on with these engines.

I have seen failures on the intake before ( oil leaks). They put silicone on the factory gaskets to the heads which I thought was weird, and then made the front and rear gasket with it..They caked it all over the dipstick and then used another stuff on all the pan gaskets and end seals.Gobbed it all over .. Funny thing.... When I took the engine apart. It had the equivelent to great stuff on the intake ( ends only) and nothing on any of the pan gaskets or or end seals. And the engine never leaked a drop.

They reused the timing cover seal and used an aftermarket 1 piece rear main seal.( even though we supplied them with all new factory quicksilver stuff i found for cheap on ebay). Morons i tell ya morons :)

The other engine builder to stay away from in that area is Entech out of Toronto... not a clue what they are doing other than ripping people off. The stuff that I have seen come out of their shop is unreal --- like a half assed Briggs and Stratton lawn mower shop! And charged big money to do it.

Randy -- I'm sorry you went through the Bullet crap -- hopefully your new builder is a different breed. Good Luck.
