Make no mistake, those guys are tough. The 2 times this year we thought we might have em. 1ST time my back gave out and the second the boat did.

When I first started APBA racing waaaaay back in 1958, my first race number was 7. The first race I was in was an 84 mile marathon that started in Newport, RI, ran around the Breton Point lightship out in the ocean and then up one side of Narragansett Bay to Providence and back down the other side to Newport. I finished 2nd.

When I got my racing number for 1959, number 7 was not available and they gave me number 6. That year I won the race and said. to myself....It must be the number! So from then on I always had either number 6 or some variation of that like 60.

I have used that number racing everything from small skiffs, inboard enduro boats, long distance ski racing, inshore boats, offshore boats and a lot of different classes in IMSA endurance auto racing.

However, like Bob Nordskog, I have plans to build a birthday present for myself this winter..... as I will turn 70 in the Spring of next year. I plan to use the number 70 on that boat. When the build get going I will post some photos.

Aronow's number was 4. With of course..... the years that he was World Champion when his number was 1.

He would use 4 or a variation of it. His first race boat called The Cigarette was a 233 Formula that he used number 16 on as he couldn't get 4. Look through all of his old race photos and you will see other variations of 4 like 8 and 2 and the 16 of course.

Although we never got to race it "combat zone" opa 617, class 6, 617 south shore boston area code, combat zone was fitting for Boston south shore as well.

The 17 on the Kryptonite was because Stylin was C-17

The 41 on the Cobra is because we knew it would be 441, and with all my dad's Ft. lauderdale roots and connections, it reminded us of an old joke....Guy gets pulled over going 85mph on State Road 84 in Lauderdale....cop ask's if he knows what the speed limit is...driver says "eddy fou"...cop says good thing I stopped you before you hit highway "fou foudy one"


That's it. Nothing too great, just old florida wise cracks...and I think aesthetically it looks good on the boat.

I see the S class now has 1, 11, 111....why is that Ryan???? I Like it, but still wondering why :)

Not positive but Brownies 1967 race boat was 24 because it was a 24' Nova. :cool-smiley-011:
