Is the turbine class out for sbi racing in the future ?

Just wondering if the class is over?

precisiondetails 10-12-2014 08:14 PM

Isn't it already over and has been over... I mean even one boat showing up at a time is not a race or class!!

Xtremeracing 10-12-2014 08:22 PM

Yes as of a month ago the class has been taken out of the rules book. There really isn't currently any active turbines that run consistently.

fastdonzi 10-12-2014 08:47 PM

Unfortunately Steve and the Sheik committed to the Turbine boat before Geico had the fire. They thought they were going to have some good competition. Well $1Mil+ into it was too late to turn back. Now they have a Kick Azz Boat and no one to race against, Same thing that happened to Geico. They thought they'd have competition as well... But any sanctioning body should let them run, its not like they where wanting the prize money, it wouldn't pay the fuel bill...But people would come to see it run...smdh..

Xtremeracing 10-13-2014 07:57 AM

Not sure they want to bother race no one, last I heard after Loto that was it. I'm sure they might do some special events but thats it.

Keytime 10-13-2014 11:16 AM

What is the range of that boat? Would they have any interest in breaking some records like the Around Long Island run?

I'm not saying it can't be done, but I crunched the numbers several years ago as we were considering it with a friends turbine powered 46 Skater and the fuel consumption was an issue for us. IIRC I think I calculated we would need about 450-500 gal of fuel. That's a lot of fuel and refueling would be pretty time consuming without some fairly specialized equipment stationed on the course.

chewiekw 10-13-2014 02:39 PM

why can't they put 1850 or 1350 in it instead of the turbines? Would be some major rework but its better then having it sit on the trailer

qatar has a 3 boat fleet in the u.s. one of the cats is a 44 victory rigged this year with 1650's. for them to rig the (turbine) mystic with the same motors would be redundant. i'm not aware on an 1850 merc motor

2 Trick Rick 10-14-2014 05:44 AM

So Qatar helped start a new series that takes the Sarasota race site, and in retaliation SBI eliminates the Turbine class at this years Key West race leaving the Qatar team no where to show case the turbine boat. ?. Sound about right?

Close. But you're assuming that the other two boats will be allowed to compete in KW.

I can assure you..they exist. Certain teams have been running them since last year.(not us)

4bus 10-14-2014 12:17 PM

Isn't Aquamania G3 currently working on a new turbine boat?

Turbine class was out way before any info about any new Org.

fastdonzi 10-14-2014 01:51 PM

They cant even run as Exhibition?? Im sure the fans would like to see it.. And in that water (Providing its not dead flat) Other boats would be able to race them....

Xtremeracing 10-14-2014 02:03 PM

Scott you ready for KW?

klaatutooyou 10-14-2014 03:17 PM

But strangely enough not announced until after the new Grand Prix Offshore series (or whatever its called) confirmed that they took control of one of SBI prizes sites.??

and please try and save the class was eliminated way before nonsense, you know as well as I do that John's happy to fit any high dollar team/boat into a class or make one (if the price is right)$$

Its been out of the book for a while and all the turbine were notified. You might not of known but it but the teams did and it had nothing to do with any new org. Maybe they will run turbine class in the new org perfect opportunity for them to try and build boat count. Just curious what advantage would it be for SBI to announce it after the new org announced themselves and before KW just curious? Not sure what announcement went out that u are talking about. As far as I know SBI hasn't released any new press release and when they do it goes to team owners.

I wrote about this in my Tuesday (yesterday) column. Of course, this is my take and not everyone will agree with it. But for what it's worth, http://www.offshoreonly.com/articles...-good-riddance.

Xtremeracing 10-15-2014 11:10 AM

Well said Matt, pretty much sums it up.

phragle 10-15-2014 11:32 AM

This is just my opinion, with isn't worth much... I am kind of glad the turbine class never took off. The gee whiz factor is incredible. The technology awesome.. That said, imagine 5 or 6 turbine boats dialed in with all the bugs worked out. All easily capable of hitting 200 plus pushing each other. We have seen multiple fatalities at slower speeds and better conditions. If the turbine class had taken off, I really think it would have gotten pretty ugly.
