Default 2015 Don Aronow Around Long Island Memorial Marathon

HORBA is asking for feedback from anyone who is serious about actually doing some real Open Ocean Offshore racing.

Who out there is serious about competing in a 271 mile race in the middle of next August 2015?

We have moved the date forward from our previous date in September. We have heard from many people that they would be willing to enter the race if it were held in August rather than September .......as many northerners have already pulled their boats out of the water by then.

Our intent is to keep the entry fee as low as possible ........and also to obtain a sponsor for the race that would possibly kick in prize money.

But before we get too deep into this .......we need to know what number of racers are serious about doing this kind of race.

We don't have specific classes yet. We would, like to put out a challenge to manufacturers who build boats between 36 and 43 feet. Decide on an engine package and we will form a class so your product can compete against other manufacturers. Say all boats have to run the 525 or the new 540 packages as an example.

What does the entrance fee cost?............or is it determined by how many partiscipating entrants you have?.......what was the entrance fee the last time it was run?

The entry fee is determined by the number of boats running and the $$ brought in by a sponsor. Naturally a sponsor doesn't want to be involved if the boat count isn't going to be reasonable......... and by that we mean at least a dozen.

When we ran the Miami to Bimini race we had at least 17 boats and everyone had a gret time.

Last time we did a ALI the entry fee was $1,000.

Sure that is accepatable as we hope to have Stu Hayim with his new MTI running with us as well.

As you are probably aware Stu set a new Around Long Island record of under 2 hours. However, that was not running with anyone else and it was on a perfect weather window that he waited for and picked.

Running in a race with others is a whole different ball game and with Stu being a former racer, we hope he comes back to run with the other racers next August.

The purpose built race boat of today probably won't make it. The stock built boat with modest power, driven by someone who is more calculating and confident, will finish in not record time, but will finish. You are welcome to join.

Sounds like fun but I'm a least a year or two away from stepping up to that 36' or bigger class that could really make that type of event fun and not just a ass whopping. However if you did say a Long Island sound leg for say 27' to 30' IO's & Outboards that may add some interest?
