Don't anchor your boat at the transom .....WHY ?????

I friend of mine is a diver . His friends took their boat out for a day of diveing . They set anchor and tied it to the BACK of the boat .

THey went down diving for a while when they noticed a boat on the bottom they didn't know was there ........ Turns out it was THEIR boat !! The waves came over the transom because of the way it was anchored and sunk it !!!:D :D

OUCH that must have sucked to figure out. I have tied stern to a couple times when I am by myself and I do not want to have to worry about falling off the bow or something. However that is always in a cove. You can really get screwed doing that if the current picks up as well and sometimes the boat can swing and get the line wrapped up in the drives. :(:(

Man, talk about a bad day on and under the water. If I ever dive I won't make that mistake.;)

I hope they had enough air to retrieve some floatation. Can you imagine diving on your own boat looking for life jackets ?

guess they never had a boater's safety course!

"BINGO, we found treasure...oh look, a cooler, BEER!!!! And' it's still cold!!!!" "DOH!"

Man, owning a 32' Fountain, I'd never DREAM of doing that. Only tie off the stern if the front has an anchor on it:)

Ya, it doesn't take much of a wave for me to catch water in my back vents.

Just curious... what kind of boat was it?

I tie off on my stern a lot. I don't like the mud and weeds on my bow when retreiving it. But I never leave the boat, except to go for a swim.

A lot of deck hatches on high performance boats are hinged towards the bow and open towards the transom. On hot summer nights with a slight breeze, I often anchor from the transom, in a calm cove, to allow air into the cabin.

I never leave boat unattended or anchor in that manor with an impending thunderstorm.

You're right...That's like one of the most basic things you learn....

Boats aren't meant to take waves from the stern, imagine that...

Now, sure I've done it too on occasion, but like most of you, you must keep an eye on things and it must be calm.

I anchor off the stern cleat all the time, but only in waist deep waters. It's quick and easy. NEVER! though in deep waters with current nor waves....

Dueclaws 08-30-2002 09:19 AM

A few years ago a local guy did that to his 38'Cig. What exacerbated the situation is that when he noticed the waves coming over the transom, he "backed down" to release the anchor but ended up on the rope. It wrapped around his prop and because the anchor was stuck on debris, it sucked the transom down. Boat went down. Twin blown engines, speedmasters, etc.

I'm with you Rick.....we do it all the time. It's just too easy to drop the anchor from the stern when in shallow, calm water. But I would never leave the boat that way! Unbelievable!!

RUSSSR1 08-30-2002 09:29 AM

Wow think about it your diving and glance over your sholder to see your boat sinking to the bottom. Man that sight must have been etched for good.

boot,

I hope your buddy is a better diver than a boater. Even in shallow water i anchor from the bow, because I hate stepping on the anchor when i'm going back to the boat for a beer. I also retrieve the anchor from the side of the boat by having my wife unty the line from the bow cleat and walk back to the cockpit. I then drive towards the anchor put the boat in neutral so the boat drifts pasts the anchor (and I don't foul the line on the props) this will release the anchor and I can easliy pull it up from the side of the boat and clean it off. Cuz i hate getting crap on the bow of my boat too.

Doesn't anyone remember the movie Jaws:rolleyes:

When they tried to tie the shark to the stern it almost sank the boat swamping it with water while the fish ran:eek:

Always off the bow...never off the stern....no matter what depth...by the time you notice it's getting bad it too late...hydraulics takes over and sinks the boat:mad:

I watched them raise an Donzi 33' crossbow off the bottom of the sound because the guy was to lazy to walk over the windsheild and get to the bow, he used the stern to anchor over night. The waves came right over the platform and it sank.

Whoops!!!!!! how deep was the water?
