Determining wave height for the OSO uneducated.

There has been much talk about are 3's really 3's?? or "honest they were 6s but the camera makes them look like 2's."

I propose the following formula for straight bottom V hulls. (I do not have a formula for stepped hulls as the whole concept of spinning if turning the wheel 5/32nd's of an inch at a speed greater than 7.6 mph scares me)

Thus in a straight hull at 60 mph in flat water, a 1 foot wave gives a "wheeeee" feeling for less than 1 second

A 2 foot wave gives a "wheeee" feeling for less than 2 seconds

A 6' wave gives a "wheeeee" feeling of less than 6 seconds

Any wave giving a wheee feeling of greater than 15 seconds while the spousal unit on board runs the risk of severe physical, psychological and financial injury.

However,

A wave giving a "wheee" feeling of greater than 15 seconds while a male friend with grease under his fingernails and fiberglass itch is in board will actually be rewarded with cheers. high fives, and free beer once you tie up to the bar,

scarab63 11-19-2014 06:56 PM

Lol.......I like it.
Although my boat doesn't even come out of the water in 2s.
So no weeeeeeee.

Anyways what fun would that be if oso waves were the actual height. Some guys tell fish stories. OSO tells air / wave height stories!

Drew555 11-19-2014 06:56 PM

I got stuck in a nasty flash flood thunderstorm a bunch of years ago. I had to pull off my trip and anchor till it passed. After about 30 min. Of golf ball size rain drops the sun followed directly behind it. The wind was not blowing at all. So I pulled anchor and started my trek back home. When I rounded the breakwater I was surrounded by beautiful 3 1/2 ' rollers. No chop. They wher like glass lined rollers. I gad that weeeee! Feeling every second. Laughing my ars off the whole trip. It was worth the wetness and beating I took before I found safe cove to hide out in. It was one of my favorite trips to date.

Drew555 11-19-2014 06:58 PM

Not sure that 6' waves give any of us that "weee" feeling. It's more like " shut up....... Hold on..... Where are the kids....hahaa .

When your wife reaches over and rips your privates off your body so fast she doesn't rip your shorts, the waves are too big.

Drew555 11-19-2014 07:07 PM

My wife acts like I made the waves lol. She can't understand it's way smoother on top of them than in the snot. But I'm working on it.

Could be. Both are on / off switches.

I had a girl once, I purposefully tried to scare. couldnt do it, she just kept smilling. Later when I was telling her she had major balls, she told me with a completely straight face "Not really, I just know in my heart you would never do anything to hurt me, so why would I be scared??"

She now teaches philosphy at Harvard. Should never have let that one go.....

that last one made me shoot dr. pepper out my nose. sorry rob lol

THRILLSEEKER 11-19-2014 07:29 PM

I'll make it simple. A legit 4' wave on Erie involves a 3.5 seccond WEEE followed a split second later solid right hook to the jaw. In the Ocean: a 5 seccond WEEE (the world just dropped out from under me, when are we gonna land?)

1989mach1 11-20-2014 07:44 AM

The videos dont do justice to what our lake erie throws at us most of the time. Its like being in a washing machine and then being dropped in to a hole. It can go from 1-2s to 4-5s in a heart beat and thats with Noaa numbers to back it up. In 2fters I got my best speed out of my boat trimmed up and skipping at 82 83 on gps. With no weee moments they where close together and I just ran the tops.

1989mach1 11-20-2014 07:51 AM

this was taken in late September coming back for kelleys island to Sandusky bay and noaa reported 4s that day. I think it was mostly 3s and some 4s mixed in where I was running. I have had my new boat for 3 years now and this was the first time I got wet running and we where running at around 55 the hole time.

this one is heading to kelleys leaving the flat bay then about 2 footers out in the lake but running a bit harder

Your excellent formula can also be applied in a post-landing sense in that a two-foot wave, post landing, could leave you groaning for two seconds, a six-foot wave for six seconds, and so on. Anything beyond six seconds warrants an ambulance ride. :)

Did Noah work for NOAA ?

True, but anything over 8 seconds wins the rodeo

A lot of WEEEes depends on the boat you drive. My WEEEEee's last for abut a minute at a time. Now I just hope that my Wee-Wee would last that long. :)
But in all seriousness, if you have to wonder how big are the waves, you shouldn't be running In it.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one that has to deal with this... misery loves company!

Maybe we should start a "standardization process" for categorizing or grading wave-- a bench mark that could used is how olives are graded!!!

1. Petite - can see your reflection of your face (ugly people not eligible- well ok ulgy people can participate but only if you live south of Tennessee)

2. Small - The wave of a Mallard duck- Maximum wave a Bayliner is allowed to encounter

3. Medium - Size of a Bass Boat wake - WOT (Signals with various fingers as they pass are acceptable- and encouraged in Indiana)

4. Large- Water Splashes up the sides of the boat and occasionally gets passengers wet

5. Extra Large - Water Splashes up the sides of the boat but definitely gets passengers wet and bilge pumps begin to engage

6. Colossal-- Only Baja, Fountain, PowerQuest, Cigarette, Sunsation, Cobalt (had to throw that in), Skater, Nordic and any other high cost boats are allowed out

The only time my wife is not throwing punches and yelling at me to slow down is when the gopro is on. Must not want to look like a crazy person. .. lol

tommymonza 11-20-2014 11:25 AM

Exwife was always a trooper when I was in my 18 hotrod.
And this was even after her only riding in the boat 2 times and having the gimble ring strip out and the boat making a hard left at 60 and her ending up at the hospital with a dislocated shoulder.
Back in those days there was 2 speeds no wake and full throttle and most of that was on Lake Michigan.

Didn't realize how scary the passenger seat was until I rode in it after selling the boat

7. Apache Water -- Surfers generally refer to this as double overhead. Only navigable in an Apache aka: The Chuck Norris of Power Boats.

Sounds familiar. There are several occasions where I get punched by my wife and ordered to slow down, and the GoPro is expressly prohibited in one of them. So far.
