You nailed it. There's no doubt that the cost of gas, insurance, etc, has played a huge role in fewer young people getting into the go fast world, but the lack of affordable boats is an issue that hasn't been mentioned in this thread enough.
I can think of a bunch of high-end builders and several that I would consider to be 'good,' but I can't think of a single one building entry level boats anymore. Is there anything new(ish) for less than 75k? This problem in combination with an aging (and thus harder to finance) fleet of 'entry level' boats makes it pretty tough for anyone to enter the sport without some serious cash. It's not just young people it's hard for most people, If you can afford to boat consider yourself lucky. 65k boat loan= 750 month, 1600 year ins, 6000 fuel annually, 2000 maintenance, 4000 slip. Not a lot of people can toss 24000 a year on boating. I could by a brand new Harley every year for the cost of boating. |

Sheeesh, the "problems" we have! |
Again, reading more and more of these posts... I can relate to alot or at least have grown up and with alot of the "game changers" for the younger generations. Being just 30, I grew up when the great NES (Ninetendo Entertainment System) took childhoods everywhere by storm. I remember asking for one for Christmas and in 1990 I got it. At a whopping 6 years old. I still have it to this day, still bust it out from time to time... (on a side note, it just really sucks balls that you cannot play duck hunt on a nice led big screen!!!).. since then many game systems came out, I played them at my friends houses but I never had to urge or need for another one. I would have rather played in the rain.... As I got a little older I did buy as PS2 just to play grand theft auto vice city... still the only game I own... I built my first engine when I was 14 years old for my buddy's 79' F100 truck. (400M engine). The idea of taking a bunch of pieces of metal and actually seeing a running, usable result was more satisfying than say, legos or a puzzle. I stuck with the auto stuff and stayed away from the electronic age. My first 4 cars were all standard shifts and my daily driver still is!
So to get to the point, my interest was in machines, whether it be a bicycle, motorcycle, car, truck, boat etc.... my interest was not with video games... I knew where I wanted to sink my money... friends or acquaintances look at me and say "must be nice" nice to what? Go to the lake with fiends, enjoy the sun, and live life? There is expense but there is expense in other things... $700 phones, $4-500 video game systems with a new $50-60 game every other week... money adds up no matter where you spend it... I probably spend more than alot of my friends do but I worked my ass off to be able to do it... I am not married and have no kids... my mom lives 2000miles away in sunny Arizona and I check in from time to time and make sure that she is taken care of. She is my main responsibility other than myself. My toys would go in a second for her but as of now she is fine, enjoying the freshly retired life and soaking up the sunny Arizona days! I work hard all winter and build a bank account to play in the summer... I don't ask my friends to pay or chip in for fuel... its my toy, its my expense, my close friends that I know have money and boat every weekend with me I might accept a little green from time to time but newbies, friends of friends blah blah blah... I didn't invite them aboard to invade their wallets... So yes the biggest reasons I can see, being a younger person myself, are the cost of operating and just simply a change in hobbies and interests in the younger generations... |
It's almost like the dark side Vs the good side of the force. Here we all are here on our I-phones or lap tops or PC's wasting time on a internet website complaining about kids today on their I-phones, lap tops or PC's wasting time on the internet. :picard1:

Lol good point
|
I agree that $ is a big issue with "younger" boaters. But I think there is more. The vid, big screen monitor to play some stupid worthless game, not getting your hands dirty is even more. Getting motivated and learning to see satisfaction of your work is history. Money didn't grow on trees when I got into boating. (Mid 70's) I found a way to support my passion. Now days there is NO passion for anything but sit front of screen. Some one wants to get a 30'+- something boat, they will find a way if they want it bed enough. "X" generation kids don't want anything bed enough. Saddens me. :(

I'm 30 years old. My generation is quite sad. I only have one other friend that has his own tool box and tools. I enjoy owning my own set of tools and tool box. To be honest I need a bigger tool box. The other problem with my generation they don't want to know how to fix things. Let alone the same friend I mentioned about is the only other one that changes his own oil. I enjoy changing the oil on my car. It's an easy job to do. Yet everybody has someone to change it for them. As far as working on anything it should be easier with having you tube you have a good idea of how to do things.
The other major problem and this is with all generations. Is that they want to keep up with The Jonses on there house. So they watch HGTV and think they need to redo all the rooms to there house, even if there house is perfectly fine. With going all out and redoing all the rooms in the house your looking at 100K plus. I'll take a pass on that and get a awesome looking boat instead. I enjoy the thrill of having a boat it's very relaxing when your out there boating. Hearing the exhaust and going WOT when I get the chance to. |

I am 38, my younger brother is 31, 2 totally different guys, he loves boating (on my boat) has no urge to actually own one, says he does but I would be stuck working on it... I have built all my toys myself, part out mustangs for years to afford extras all my toys boat, Cobra, Jeep CJ all come from extra cash and work, no loans... my brother does absolutely nothing to make extra money, never wants to work extra at work for overtime (we work together) and then complains he has no money, the fact we grew up under the same roof floors me.... my dad busted his ass working on the side (autobody) to make his play money and thats where I get it from... I am so glad I did!!
Todays generation for the most part has no interest in working hard, they want it all handed to them.... |

EDIT - that was harsh Just because someone claims they don't have any money, doesn't mean they don't have any money. I know some farmers that will tell you they can't afford hamburger steak at the cafe but own 7000 acres and run 2000 head. |

Have a stepson who is paying off college loans after finishing his masters degree last spring and working in Busan, S. Korea.. He lives in a studio apartment and hired someone to clean his apt and do his wash ! He's going to Bali over the holidays ! He doesn't understand spending $10 daily at Starbucks is $3650 annually.
Obviously we have no interest helping him with his student loans or where he will live when he returns or how he will afford a car and housing. |
I grew up on Video games....I was probably 6 or 7 when Nintendo hit the store...My brother and I probably had 100 games between us..
We still spent more time outside hunting, fishing, playing baseball, basketball, etc then we did in front on the game station. We played video games at night or when it was cold too outside to be doing anything out there.. By the time I was 16, I had pretty much given up on video games...The Car and girls were way more important. I couldn't wait to get my drivers license...I see kids today that have no interest in obtaining their DL and I don't understand it...I have a friend who's kid only got one at 19 before he went to college, and wouldn't have got it if he could have gotten away with it... Today I'm am 36 with 2 kids....We have 3 playstations in the house, and Xbox, and a Wii. 2 Ipads, a couple ipods, and iphones... The gaming systems do not see a lot of use, mostly used for video streaming at night or during the winter months. Both my kids spend ample time outside playing with neighborhood kids. Probably more time then they do in front of the TV. Both play basketball and the boy plays baseball, the daughter is a cheerleader and loves it even though I'm not sure she is really cut out for it. (I'm not one of those parents that think my kids are the best at everything) When they don't get the playing time in sports that they think they deserve and mope around about it, I tell them they need to work harder and I think they playing time they are seeing is rather generous given what I have seen out of the kids that are playing. When my son was playing football I watched one mom call the coach on the sideline and tell him to put her kid in..It was the craziest thing I have ever seen and I let her know what I thought about it. My kid was riding the pine too (where he should have been) and her kid was no better. They pulled their kid from the team a couple weeks later, and the next year he was on a different team that his father coached and he played all the time...I found it comical....This is the problem with today's age...Mommy and Daddy fight for there kid, think they deserve a ribbon for everything, and then wonder why they can't succeed on their own. I am trying to raise my kids how I imagined my parents were raised 50 years ago. You have to earn it if you want it, and you are not the best at everything...Better them learn that lesson at a young age then to have reality smack them in the face after school..They may despise me for it a bit now, but I hope when they are older, they will thank me for it... |
Thankfully a few of these later posts sound like what I consider normal people. Many kids I hear today just want to get others to "do the work" so they can be "rich" and "buy the stuff I want". I say a lot of so called rich are not as happy as us self sufficient types that get satisfaction doing our own repairs and upgrades. But of course it helps to be able to bring home a little cash... to get parts you know...
|
I've always said if you job pays more then what you create/build/repair on you own in the same time you would be crazy to not just do your job and pay for it. But once you understand what the true cost is (not the inflated retail version) there is not many jobs that pay that much and I've never had one.

Guys on the internet complaining that the kids spend too much time on the internet... haha :D

well I can say for myself I grew up on little 14ft aluminium fishing boats with my parents and loved every aspect of it. Once I started working interest wavered in boating, I was way too busy spending all my bar tending money on beer and restaurants! About a year after joining the army (at 25) I was fortunate enough to get posted to some of the best boating water in Ontario and bought my current boat brand new while everybody around me was telling me I was stupid for spending that kind of money on a toy (same people who owned 2 quads 2 sleds lots of guns and a giant truck and sports car and they said I was going to go broke and stupid for buying a 36grand boat....).
Fast forward to today, wife, mortgage, 2 kids with a third on the way, Canadian gas prices.... I'm thankful that the boat has been paid for for quite a while since I would not have the money to drop on it and live withing a great boating community that does not judge on the social status of someone. If I was posted to an area where the boating was not as good or the boat ramp was 2 hours away I would probably find another hobby(god forbid!!!!) Not a weekend goes by where the kids don't want to go out on the water and hang on the beach and not a sunny warm day goes by where I don't think about going out. Its an absolute obsession for me and the kids (wife not so much but she enjoys it). unfortunately the next boat will not be the 30ft go fast that I have always dreamed of but will be more along the ways of a nice house boat with the Fourwinns tied to the side and hopefully with a nice well massaged 400hp small block on it by then to give me the go fast I want on a budget! |
ummm its called boating in North america and winter..... :)

In my 20s I used to think he who had the most toys when he died won the game. Go go juice was $1.40 back then. Banks were handing out low interest 20 yr loans in the late 90s like candy.
Now that I'm 40 all I can think about is saving money and not wanting to work for the man anymore. I still love boating but prefer to do it with friends that have fast boats and throw them a bone for an occasional ride. I'll take a nice lake house and a pontoon with a big egg beater on it. Take kids and dogs boating with me. |

I skimmed through the thread and agree with those who said money. I'm 34 and worked VERY hard to get where I am. Traveled for work, long hours, on call 24/7, college, learned a trade also, make only smart financial decisions, save/invest alot of money, etc. I owe it all to my parents raising me to be "money smart".
Alot of my friends in their 20's and 30's don't have extra cash for luxuries. They bought nice houses, married, had a kid or two, and can afford a new car every 5 years. That's it. No money for anything else if they want to retire ever. If their wife works, it barely puts any in their pocket after daycare. Story to note... One of my homes is in a very rural farm town 30 miles from any town with a Walmart or major grocery store. I've had it since my early twenties, always had nice "toys", and the people in town don't know me except that I'm the guy with cool vehicles, boats, motorcycles, etc. On evening I'm at THE gas station filling up my big tire prostreet motorcycle and a kid in his early teens on a bicycle comes up to me. I'd seen him over the years hanging out with friends, is always courteous, and always compliments/asks about my vehicles. So he says to me, "Wow, that's an awesome bike. I hope I can have nice stuff like you when I get out of school." I reply, "Don't ever make toys your goal in life. Always work hard to make more money no matter what the job may be. When you have money, the toys will come easy." We chatted for a bit and I headed out on an evening cruise on my motorcycle. I really hope that kid listens to what I said. If he does, he'll be way better off. |

1. you cant take your money with you 2. you are only young once. 50's-60's arent like 20's-30's...especially if you have a family kids etc. plus all your friends are long gone by the time 50 rolls around. I totally agree with number 1 in your list. I totally disagree with number 2 in your list. I am 55 and have maintained many of the friendships I have had since my teens and see them and their families regularly. I have an 11 yr. old son who has a need for speed and is the reason why we bought the Formula. Now 60mph isn't fast to many of you, but I am perfectly happy that my 38' boat will go that fast and has a nice cabin and conveniences to boot. |
