HELP I need a digital camera

I'm looking for a digital camera at a good price. It needs to have a US warrenty and NOT reconditioned. Any good web sites? Maybe the canon s-200 power shot?

Thanks,
Rick

digital camera's have come a long way, most current brands today give good to great results, this is one area were you get what you pay for

Check out www.pricegrabber.com and eBay.

start here..How much do you want to spend

Then do you want to make prints or stay use an on line album??

If shooting sports..get nothing less than a 10X optical zoom.. DO NOT pay attention to "digital" zoom. The key word is optical..

Nikon Coolpix 995 is the way to go for middle of the road.

I bought a good Canon and had a lot of trouble with it. Took it back and bought a Sony, no problems.

I bought a Canon S40 and am very pleased with it. Your first decision is megapixels. You need at least 3MP to make 8X10s equal to normal film.

You must be careful where you buy the camera. I got an excellent deal from Amazon.com. It's a site you can trust and they had excellent prices.

Good luck

I’ve had my Sony Cyber Shot (DSC-F707) w/ the Zeiss lens and infra red focus for about a year. So far I can honestly say it is the best camera I have ever owned. This thing focuses and takes pictures literally in the pitch black. The quality of its photos is unreal. Its pricy but, as previously stated, you get what you pay for. I haven’t picked up my Minolta 35mm since getting the Sony Digital.

I've been using an Epson camera for a while, great quality product, comes with some useful software.

Epson printers can direct connect to the camera, and at 3.x megapixels or better, you're printing your own incredible 8 x 10's. I still can't believe the quality of detail and output.

I have the Minolta Dimage S304. It was $499 and it is a 3.2 Mega Pixel, has movie mode. Easy to use. Would reccomend.

Ive got a Sony Mavica. I like it because it uses floppy's and you dont need a cord or software. Just stick the floppy in any computer and youve got pictures. It also does super closeups. Its a little big and they have a CD version too. You could probably put thousands of pics on the CD.

My Olympus C-2100 now selling for about 600 was 999..has 10x optical zoom...2.1 megapixel..rapid frame advance...movie mode and more.
With a 128 meg smart media card I get 257 high quality photos.

I just recently bought a Nikon CoolPix 5700 for the 8x lens that I took to the Corpus Christi races. It's at the top end, or a "pro-sumer" of the price range. Looked strongly at the Sony 707 and Minolta Dimage 7i also. Both great cameras with good zoom. All are in the 5 mega-pixel range. Sony uses their MemoryStick and only has 128mb. Wanted more storage room. My Nikon uses CompactFlash - up to 1gb, or IBM MicroDrives - up to 1gb storage.

A little lower on the scale, look at the Kyocera (Yashica) FineCam S3, S4, and S5. They're getting great reviews. Or FujiFilms offerings like the FinePix 2800 Zoom.

Check out these sites for detailed reviews:

Here's a photo originally shot at 2560x1950 pixels and resized to 640x360 to post. It's a shot of my seat back from about 4 feet away and zoomed in. Nice detail from the 5 mega-pixel camera.

This is my first digital and I love it. Good luck on your search.

Here's another:

Three questions:
-Is there a teleconverter (doubler) lens available to boost it to 16X optical? My 10X is great but 16X would be better for offshore racing.
-What type of storage media?
-how much?

Thanks
marc

Oh, another really cool LITTLE camera is Minolta Dimage X. Fits into a shirt pocket. 2mp, 3x zoom, lots of features. I'm thinking I might get one just to take along anywhere.

Tejas Raz 09-01-2002 11:35 AM

gdfatha:

There's a 1.5x teleconverter and a wide angle too. They didn't get it into the store before I went to the races. In 35mm terms that would make it a 35mm to 420mm zoom instead of the stock 28-280mm.

Around $1100

Not fair to talk about the race without a pic. Here's Flashwave.

Only 649??? I don't beleive it even though it says without memory card!
AlsoI would get that in a heartbeat for 1000 if they had a teleconverter (larger than 1.5) that fits it. Ritz camera adverizes a 3X for "ALL" coolpixs but I think the 5700 has different size even with adapter ring..
Please see if you can find out more..

649? How much you want to bet that's a foreign model with no warantee, no memory, no charger, no battery, no nothing! Don't even try to get the factory to fix it if it breaks. Good price, but you takes your chances. Oh, how about a manual in english! If you even get one.

I wish it were a 2x converter too. How about 3x? With no loss of resolution?! 1.5x = approx 10% loss of light. 2x = approx 20% loss. The adapter ring is a 5700 part number. The ac power supply from the others will work though. I bought from a camera shop and they called Nikon tech support while I was waiting to make sure. The lens is a different size than all the other CoolPix's. It is a brand new model. I had to wait 3 weeks for the supply chain to catch up to the demand. Noticed they want $329 for 256mb CF. I paid $359 for 512mb fast memory. Got a 256mb also in case I get crazy in hi-rez mode.

I do like the camera. The Sony does do better at low light though if you have a need for that. Sony has 2x digital zoom. Nikon has 4x. But that's not what you want. Compare the glass when it comes to zoom. There is a company that makes an 8x converter and I'm trying to find out if it will work with the 5700. Saw it in this month's Outdoor Photography magazine.

There are easier to use cameras, but this one has a lot of features and I wanted a hi-performance camera, so I don't mind taking the time to learn them all. And it's not that hard really.
